RS6 C5 Gearbox oil choices

Post by slklite » Tue Jan 05, 2016 11:13 am

Hello guys, I have a question for you.

I'd like to have a gearbox oil service on my car.

I would like to buy oil, and I need your advice.

These are the references right ?

- BMW Oil No. 8322 9407807
- Citroen Oil No. Z 000169756
- Jaguar Oil No. JLM 20238
- Mercedes Benz Oil No. A 0019892203
- Peugeot Oil No. Z 000169756 607 V6 ATF LT 71141 BVA 4HP20
- Porsche Oil No. 999.917.547.00)
- ZF Lifeguard 5

I thought I'd try to find a good deal on ebay. When I search for lifeguard 5, I find a lot of this oil : Mannol AG52.
Normally it should be compatible with the norms mentionned above. Even on their website (http://sct-catalogue.de/en/?action=cata ... 0221000029) they say it is compatible.

http://sct-catalogue.de/en/?action=cata ... AL&return=

So I found a deal with this oil, and decided to buy some. I asked the seller, and he told me that it wasn't compatible...

I'm lost, what do you guys think ?

Thank you for your help.

Best regards.

It's in the RS6 useful info & links thread, here's the info from there:

ATF equivalence list: These are all the same fluid, made by the same manufacturer, but the price varies depending on where you buy it.
ZF Lifeguardfluid5 (ZF No. S671 090 170):
Pentosin ATF1
Audi / VW Oil No. G 052162 A1 / A2 / A6
BMW Oil No. 8322 9407807
Citroen Oil No. Z 000169756
Jaguar Oil No. JLM 20238
Mercedes Benz Oil No. A 0019892203
Peugeot Oil No. Z 000169756
Porsche Oil No. 999.917.547.00

Let us know if you find any going cheap :)

Hello, thanks for the reply. I've seen this already, but I was just wondering. I've contacted mannol for more info.

The seller told me to use this instead : ADDINOL XN plus

I'll let you know.

In the meantime, if someone has any information, please share with us ;)

Thanks.

I'm using Motul Multi ATF in mine - it's a LifeGuard 5 rated fluid & very decent. I also have at least 40 litres of the stuff in my shed that I tried to sell and nobody wanted!

Pentosyn ATF1 was the factory fill, and is readily available.

Well, I've contacted mannol, and since I'm a private person, they couldn't tell me if this oil would work in the RS6 geabrox.

However they said that it's the specification only that counts. I guess if the oil has the specification for say the porsche norms (Porsche Oil No. 999.917.547.00), it should be all right.

We are afraid, because the cost of the repair if it goes wrong is high ... And the manufacturers use this fear to sell their products ...

@ sweegie : does this oil work for you ? What do you have to say about it ? If you still have some, would you sell it ? Where are you located ? (Scottland ?)

Thank you.

Mobil LT71141 is also the correct spec IIRC.

Yeah, must be nearly 50k with this oil in the box and i'm happy still. Due a service again this year and have no reservations about putting more in. Not sure if I'd sell some now - think I'm resigned to keeping this car for a while yet, so probably just keep it as my lifetime supply! Opie Oils or Powerenhancer will sort you out for decent oil though; both are highly competent.

Bear in mind that oil is only partially synthetic, and will break down over time. You'll only be changing about half the fluid anyway, so I would 100% be repeating the process in a few months, if the box fluid has never been changed.

Personaly speaking, I wouldn't be using a cheaper fluid in these cars - the transmission takes a f**kload of abuse.

When I got the car, I performed 2 changes within a couple of months of each other, the first of which was with a funky detergent too. Both changes done with fully synth oil.

All right, so if I understood correctly, as long as it's fully synthetic, it's good to use right ?

Thank you.

If it's a good fully synthecic Lifeguard 5 oil, it will "probably" be ok

They don't come much cheaper than £10 a litre.

Seems like a good price - I'd need to buy a big 210l drum of Pentosyn to get near to that figure.

Let us know how you get on with it.

Sure thing, but I had to buy 20 litres to get that price ...
