diff ratios

Post by thworks » Sun Nov 22, 2015 7:36 pm

hi all, recently bought an rs6 avant 2004 and love it. however the pinion bearing in my rear has taken a turn for the worse. i picked up a second hand diff yesterday, went to fit today but i have different ratios. anyone know if there are different ratios fitted to the rs6. i have a 3.2 in my car and was supplied a 4.1 as an rs6 diff.
thanks in advance

FON

You should have a 3 letter code stamped on the diff housing. There are 4 different codes with 2 different ratios. Which one(s) have you got?
Daytona RS6 C5 Avant. Viper'd, Billies, Waggers, MTM box brain, C6 stoppers, xcarlink, R8 coolant cap (woohoo)
///M3 E46 | XC90 (V8, natch) | Passat GTE | RR Classic V8 flapper

is it the code on the alloy part of the bottom of the diff, if so both have the code but different ratios.

EUS xxxxx : 37:9 -> 4.111
DUR xxxxx : 37:10 -> 3.700
EUU xxxxx : 37:10 -> 3.700

What happened to the hotlink on FON?

thanks I'll have a look for the code, strange that mine measures as a 3.2:1 though.

Ok so the only code I can find is ggw followed by 6 numbers. On both diffs. Some googling seems to suggest this is 3.19 ratio which is what I have.
Anyone know about this code?

Mmm. Found some more info. GGW is the final drive code for the RS6. Looks like it was only fitted to the RS6. The ratio is 37:9.

I can't find any 3.2 diffs on the RS6 era quattro cars. Where are you getting that from?

So took the diff out last night and stripped it, thankfully had 37/9 ratio, pinion bearing was really seized so getting the wrong reading when working it out from spinning pinion x times to 1 rev of output. New diff in and all good!
Nice one for the help, much appreciated
