EGT sensor faulty.

Post by bilko1 » Sat Oct 31, 2015 1:24 am

I have an intermittent fault with my passenger side EGT sensor according to VCDS, will this cause the ecu to limit power? No engine management light comes on when driving. I did watch live readings and when the exhaust temp gets to 395 degrees the reading from the passenger side shoots up to 1100 degrees. This 1100 degrees seems to be a default reading or substitute value as if you disconnect the sensors when running the reading immediately go to this value.

After a bit of googlling it appears Audi EGT sensors are pretty poor quality due to the laws about lead free solder. My sensors were replaced when I had the gearbox rebuilt so would be the newer lead free versions which have only lasted 10,000 miles. Unfortunately they are out of the 2 year Audi parts warranty so I'm going to try and get to the circuit board and hopefully fix it. Am I right in thinking the RS6 EGT sensors are wideband? If so that's a shame as some Motorsport company in Poland make replacement circuit boards but from what I can tell ( I can't read Polish) they are not wideband.

I have heard of people having success reflowing the solder on the boards.

Thanks Dave, after a bit more Googling I have managed to contact the Polish guy (Sid) so I've bought a pair. Next question how do I get black goo out of the sensor box without destroying the circuit board / connectors ? Is there a magic chemical that dissolves it ? I'm a bit annoyed at myself for buying new Audi ones when I had my Gearbox done, the original ones are a lot easier to remove the board out of. Hindsight is wonderful.

I wonder what they use. Does it chip? Or is it rubbery? I'd try and get a bit of and then try dissolving it in the usual suspects: acetone, Isopropyl Alcohol, thinners, white spirit, petrol, etc.

You can open them up and fix the solder, works most of the time. Someone just did a full write up with pics on rs6.com.
