PiperCross or K&N air filters.. Which is better for my c5 RS6?

Post by ZakTech » Fri Jun 05, 2015 5:45 pm

I need your input and advice.

Received my performance air filters from EuroParts (UK) today. Ordered two sets because there was a significant price difference between the K&N and the other brand which was not named.
What's arrived is a set of PiperCross foam filters :) along with the K&N set.

There is a 25% off promotional offer at EuroParts.com on performance filters and if you use the code "freecleaner' they throw if a K&N cleaning kit with each filter ordered.

I need your advice, to select either the K&N or PiperCross filters so I can return the other set plus two of the four cleaning kits.

Pointless discussion now. The foam filter should filter better than the K&N, but unfortunately it doesn't fit as well. In fact the fitment is so poor that I've had to stick to the K&N.

ITG filters! (which is what mrc use) they are a similar construction to pipercross but much better quality.

My pipercross ones didn't fit well and the foam couldn't flow enough air, resulting in my engine consuming most of the foam, luckily the turbos were ok but I had a fun job cleaning the maf sensors!

K&N will stop anything smaller than your average boulder, despite what all the k&n fanboys say. (personal experience in previous car)

I agree the filtration on the K&N isn't all that grand. I guess I should have waited and bought the ITGs.

Many say stick with stock, flows just right. Others can flow too much air and disrupt the MAFs I believe. Maybe if you're highly upgraded 600+ HP you might need more air.

I'm not too sure most people would agree, those filters are tiny!

I like it when most people don't agree with me.

Mine has a couple of BMC air filters which were in it when I got it. Ive cleaned them with the proper cleaning kit and they seem fine.

Happy with them so far.

I've had BMC filters before, they're almost identical to the K&N. I had a call with someone that has a set of K&N air filters in his c5 rs6 for some time now (few years). He's not had any issues. In theory the MAF will only have issues if the filter is over oiled... The access oil will be sucked in, passing over the MAF sensors causing them to read incorrectly.

The corrugation will give them a much bigger surface area though. Ive just removed my ITG filters for cleaning and am shocked to discover this:

Needless to say I wont be putting those back in. Thinking of using standard filters for their better filtration and reliability but does anyone know if they are capable of flowing enough air without causing restrictions on a chipped car?
