Thank you for all the helpful replies.

To hopefully give a bit more insight into my needs.

The C5 appeals more in terms of practicality, it will be a replacement for the RRS and that mainly gets used when loads are large i.e all the family and dog going on journey. I love the B5 though, loved my S4 and think the RS4 looks stunning.

Budget wise, yes i could buy a B7 but i prefer the look of the B5 and C5, see so many B7's around here. Friend had a B7 as an interim car whilst waiting for his new car and said he found it a bit bland, said his B5 felt more fun.

My logic was buying a B5 or a C5 will give me a nice margin financially, should anything go wrong or need replacing straight away, get it straight in for a full inspection and health check and get all jobs done, giving me a good car from the off. The RRS has already cost just over £4K in 2.5yrs of ownership, not including belt changes at £1K.

Going to hang onto the RRS through Christmas and into New Year then get searching for a car, although if something amazing pops up in the meantime then that may change.

B7 has very little room in the rear but would handle better than the B5 even with all mods done too it I'd suspect. Your friends comments on the B5 being more fun to drive, could be on about the power delivery not the handling. IMO the B5 is the best looking RS4 made, but you don't see much of the outside when driving it.
If you require the space/room then the C5 wins easily. Sounds like the running costs could mirror the RRS so you will be ok there. You will either fall in love with driving a fast auto, or you will hate it and keep feeling for the gear lever when driving fast.
Do you own VCDS (Vagcom)? I'd have thought so if you owned a B5, if not get one and take it with you when looking at possible purchases. Another thing, where are you located? May be an owner close to you who will let you have a look around theirs.

If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there!

Thanks chunky79, i'm more edging towards the C5 but i fully agree with yourself, the B5 RS4 is stunning visually. Your also correct in comment about friends B7, he said the power delivery wasn't what he expected, didn't keep the car long as felt he couldn't gel with it, even on a trackday.

Would be great to get a look round an RS6 if anyone is local to Newcastle area and ok with that.
