Wheel Bearing Question... (Now With A Video)

Post by carterjohn » Mon Jul 07, 2014 12:29 pm

Noticed a metallic clicking noise coming from the drivers side front wheel last week so dropped the car back to the garage I bought it from and they replaced discs/pads a top suspension arm and a wheel bearing.
I picked it up on Friday and its been fine until today ..
Its started doing it again and after using the "search bar at the top of the page" i found loads of similar story's from C6 owners but my car is a C5 !

So can anyone shine some light on this ( is it the same on both cars )..?

Cheers in advance

Could be CV joint, or even just the clips on the CV joint rubbing. Does it get worse when on full lock?

I tend to follow Nobby's route on this one. Doesn't seem like a bearing at all....
That does sound like a CV joint on it's way out. They're only about £15 though!
jack the car up, get under and have a look: follow the driveshaft along until you come to a rubber boot. If it's intact and secured both ends, LEAVE IT.... If it's "open" then i would say you've found the problem. You should also be able to spin the wheel (or get someone to do it) when you ear is really near! and you'll observe it. Repeat with the other side if you found nothing.

Long ago... You used to be able to jack one wheel up and put it in gear thus spinning the wheel and check, but i've not done it with a quatrro or a car with traction control! Anyone been brave enough to tell me if that's still possible? :)
I've finally got my head together but now my body is falling apart!

Is it worse on a full lock when your driving along ?.............most likely cv joint

are you sure the clicking in the video isn't whatever's hanging down scraping the block paving .....lol

Mine does this, I think it is a wheel bearing same as the C6's get. The CV joint is good, brakes are new and all bushings look good.

Edit: just watched the vid, mine does occational louder clicks, thought it was the guard on the back of the disc fouling on something at first.

Went to the garage this morning and it wouldn't do the clicking noise really heavy rain up here at the time, could that affect anything..?

It's the ball joint on either the upper or lower arm. It's beginning to seize and the clicking is as it's binding in the cup. Had exactly this on mine and replaced the lower arm, not the lower rear in my case and it was sorted. Best way to identify which ball joint it is, is to get it up on a ramp the. Use a mechanics stethoscope to listen to the joint as the wheel is being turned under load. Hope that helps. Cheers
