IMPORTING RS6 C5 Avant to USA - Here we go...

Post by willjlee » Fri Jul 04, 2014 11:25 am

Got the quotes, lined up the shipping and Shop in the US (JK Technologies) to do the conversions. Work has given some $$$ to do this, and my mind is made up, so that part is sorted

that said, I've been searching this board for RS6 specific info, but only found the RS4 import to Josh at Achtuning.

I've got a MPH/KPH cluster so I'm OK there.

JK has emailed me with : "For EPA it will need complete emissions system from tank to 02 sensors to catalysts to wiring harness. The codes (currently throwing code Fault 17831/P1423/005155 - Secondary Air Injection System; Bank 1: Insufficient Flow) you are telling me about lead me to believe nothing is on the car for obdii and so those parts and programming could be a additional "

Anyone with any thoughts or suggestions on the above or how to avoid any pitfalls?

not that I know anything about importing to the USA, but is he saying to pass the EPA he will need to test the complete emissions system or has to add something to the car to monitor/control it?

the SAI faults will need fixing for him to do this I presume?

OBD2 is the connection for vag-com and the like, which your car obviously has

thanks for the reply. Yes that was my thought as well...each time I contact JK, the quote continues to rise, so that has me concerned. I'm very lucky that work is covering this move, but at the same time, i'm not interested in getting fleeced.

here's the petition that i'm working off:

This document announces a decision by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that certain 2003 Audi RS6 and RS6 Avant passenger cars that were not originally manufactured to comply with all applicable Federal motor vehicle safety standards (FMVSS) are eligible for importation into the United States because they are substantially similar to vehicles originally manufactured for importation into and sale in the United States and that were certified by their manufacturer as complying with the safety standards (the U.S. certified version of the 2003 Audi RS6 and RS6 Avant passenger cars), and they are capable of being readily altered to conform to the standards.

not sure if anyone cares but my beast has landed on US soil!

It's at JK now and will now go through the federalization process.

well...just hit the first major pothole on the journey.

Shop is stating that all MTM mods need to be taken off, and the car has to returned to bare bone stock. I figured all this prior to shipping and had collected the necessary OEM components off parts/donor cars. However they are now stating it must be brand new US spec OEM parts...and the kicker is that it'll take them a year to do this work. in doing so, the quote has now tripled, and the timeframe is now quoted as 1 year...

Sounds dodgy at best.

I've escalated with the Shop owner, so I expect to have more info early next week.

If things continue to go south, I'll probably just have to sell and ship, or crush....

Why do they make things so difficult.

Maybe if you get a list of the parts that need changing (according to them) and we'll check for part number differences with the EU versions. I bet there are very few other than the Yankee lanterns. Seats could be an issue.

You'd think in a car loving country like the USA it would be easier to do this kind of thing. Bloody beaurocrats.

Either way, it would be interesting to see the list of work the Shop wants to do.

They hate anyone that don't buy 'Merican. OP, you'd have done a lot better to ship into Canada, then fixed paperwork for the US.
I'm surprised you got this far, the RS6 avant was never crash tested in the USA. Best of luck.
No matter where you go, there you are.

I'd like to see them show the regulations for that. How would any inspector ever know if a part was recently replaced for a used one anyway? ALL the frigging parts on the car are "used". It's not like a few more would stand out.
