Gearbox worries!

Post by winslo » Tue Dec 17, 2013 12:14 pm

Hi all

Not been on here for a few years since i had my last RS6, thought i would never have another after all the problems i had with that one!

Bought one the other day, private sale which has done 106k, loads and loads of history gearbox/torque convertor replaced at 86k 2 years ago, £4k bill present, all the usual stuff done, brakes, cambelt, coilovers

Drove the car, all good no worries, drove it back home 300 miles no issues! Some sprinted driving but mainly 85-90 motorway.

Today on my way to work i accelerated quickly it was fine in 1st, changed to 2nd then slipped when it got higher up the revs, i backed off and it changed normally into 3rd/4th etc.. no bangs that i have read up on, no hunting for gears either all seems good.

The car was warm when i accelerated, i didnt try any more quick driving on the way to work just sat at normals speeds and all good.

What would be your suggestions? Fluid and filter change? Im up in north east england, newcastle area and only 1 gearbox specialist i know of www.austrin-engineering.co.uk

Any advice would be very much appreciated

Thanks

Were you up to temp?

Could be low ATF, or poor ATF condition.

Could be split ATF pipe.

Could be worn clutch packs.

Spin the wheel and place your bets. :)

We never seem to suffer from solenoid problems or other valve body problems on these boxes. Maybe they don't get to be old enough to have 'normal' failures.

Spoke to austrin engineering, advised i get the car to them ASAP, said that it doesnt take alot of slippage to destroy the clutches. They will diagnose it/road test it for £35

lets see what happens!

Any thing else that is common i can tell them to look out for?

cheers

Bargain!

Only the ATF pipe, but I think you have to drop the valve body to see that.

Also check that the wrong filter hasn't been put in, the one with the long ATF pick-up pipe. There should be a decent amount of clearance with the oil pan.

Out of interest who did the gearbox 2 years ago? At £4000 I bet it wasn't Audi.

This is why I think it's better to nuke the box from orbit and replace it entirely with a re-manufactured Audi or ZF unit. Seen too many "expert refurbed" boxes go South.

If or when mine decides to self destruct again I think I'll go the Dave and Amanda route pending feedback.

Is Dave running standard engine and box map? I can't search, this SQL error is really getting on my nerves now:(

Sorry - went to bed without checking forum! Put it down to age, a beautiful wife, or lack of commitment!! :bigblink:

Yes I have 517 box, and Iam running Stage 2 with 880Nm torque without problem.

And yes, it probably could do with some time with Minhea at MRC further tweaking the map as at low revs (c 1000) the torque is still on the limit given the ATF pressure at those revs. Other than that - purrrrrrfect! :FIREdevil:

You're not. Once the 517 is installed get it dyno'd again. A slipping gearbox/open TC on the dyno will report higher torque. Any good dyno operator could've told you that.
No matter where you go, there you are.
