Hi! New RS6 owner in Newcastle. Some cat and map questions.
Hi all!
After 11years and about 15 different cars, mainly jap, I've decided to [try and] grow up a little so I'm getting rid of my flame-spitting Impreza and I've just bought myself a 2003 RS6 Avant in Mugello (sp?) blue with lotus white leather interior, DVD headrests and Miltek exhaust.
It's my very first German car as I've always preferred Jap, but a couple of years ago I took a shining to the Audi RS models and after researching online I figured the C5 RS6 Avant was the way to go to get the best value for money.
...And wow, it's a completely different animal to my Scooby: really comfortable, quiet and nice and smooth and that's on 19s with Billstein coilovers. With 180BHP more than my 280BHP Impreza but even though it's about 50% heavier with an auto-box it still feels quicker.
...However, even though it's quicker than my Scooby I think I jhave a disease because as usual I've already started reading up on performance mods...
I've spent all morning reading through various threads as I don't want to be a pain and ask a question that's been well covered allready but there are a few things I'd like to double check:
1. The "pre-cats" are situated in the downpipe and the other/normal cats just after the downpipe in the mid-section right? I've been a bit thrown by this as on the Impreza the pre-cat was before the turbo and the cat was in the downpipe. If this is right and I then poke out the insides of the pre cat will I have problems with the lambda sensor or is it not an issue?
2. I've contacted Rich at Viper Tuning about an ECU/TCU remap and he's gave me a price for posting my control units to him and he posts them back with a standard stage 1 map. Now this was before i was thinking about poking out the pre-cats so I'm thinking a map specific to my car will probably be better so I'll need to drive there. Can anyone recommend anywhere closer to Newcastle?
3. Also Rich told me that they only have one standard TCU map so I don't think it deletes the "kick-down" in tip mode and I would like a TCU map so I can use the tip like proper manual. I was planning on getting one sent from that Hoppen place in the US then I found out on another forum that they are now out of business (apparently). Is there somewhere [closer to home than the IoM] I can get the ECU/TCU mapped together?
Thanks!

Don't know about the Scooby (what you say surprises me) but the RS6 the pre-cats are in the downpipes and the main cats just after that. There's a tutorial in the FAQ, I believe, for gutting the cats.SubbyG00n wrote: 1. He can adapt your tune based on logs you do with a vagcom remotely. Might not be necessary if the only mod you are doing is the pre-cats.SubbyG00n wrote: 2. I had heard that it's an option with him. Best to double check directly with him.SubbyG00n wrote: 3. Shush, you know I got out of Scoobies 5 years ago due to 99% of the owners being pikeys and me not wanting to be tarred with that brush (Well that and ex-Madam making a financial booboo)! I have only just got back in to them for the sheer hell of it as I fancied some chalk & cheese that I could thrash, crash and not really care. Hell, I dislike the car intensely already and it won't be finished for another month yet..... Anyway, don't start me on that fecking scoob...........Shoppinit wrote:Rule 1 (just so Footers gets wood at the prospect of having a scooby fwend)
Could be wrong but if memory serves it was only some/most of the Newage (Bugeye-onwards) models that had cats in the turbo uppipe. On the classics it was just a standard uppipe.
Also, if you were on 280bhp with similar/lower torque on your scoob, even doing clutch-raping starts, on a run up to 100+ the 6 even in standard form would wipe the floor with the scoob, based on my ownership of 4 of them at least and the 6 but no doubt there will be a million Yoot tube vids somehow proving me wrong

Hell, my mildly modded old XJR would have taken 3 of my 4 scoobs with no real issues despite weighing the same as 10 elephants due to the torque and the delivery of it.

I don't know how to do all that quoting malarkey, I've figured how to do it on quick reply but not how to get like "SubbyG00n wrote..." or whatever so I'm just gunna have to answer without any quotes.
I've just uploaded an old video of the Scooby to photobucket and it's the first time i've done that so hopefully you can see it here:
(No, that's not me in the pic, it's wor lass in her Winter gear)

It's the only video I have as normally it flames during gear changes but I'm the only one who drives it. It was only flaming here as a boost hose had popped off on the motorway so I'd pulled over to fix the problem and thought I'd make the most of it by getting a little video b4 I fixed it.
I also have a KTM EXC-F with Akrapovic exhaust, that flames too, but normally when I don't want it to, right next to my leg when I'm stuck in a muddy bog and trying to get out, haha!
It's probs not called lotus white. I would have described it as cream but I read somewhere that it wasn't called cream but I can't remember what it's meant to be called. The 2nd hand car salesman who sold me the RS6 described it as "Lotus white"
Scooby pre-cat is defo before the turbo, on the up-pipe, I know this as I changed it myself a couple of years ago.
"Vagcom", I'm guessing that's a diagnostic reader type thing? Do I need to go to an Audi dealer and book time with them for this or something?
Also, I've just emailed Rich with more questions about his mapping.

Aye Footlong, there's a big difference in the torque like and the RS6 does (and probs will) piss all over my Scooby. My mate's trying to get the funds together as we speak to buy my Impreza off me. As you can probs see by the pic above my impreza is a 1999 facelift classic.

Haha. That's brilliant. Footlong just soiled his y-fronts, I'm sure.

Looks like a facelift classic UK wagon to me? What bhp/torque were you running on the non-forged internals out of curiosity? Did the lump last the life of the car or did you suffer the usual chocolate piston number 3 of the 97-98/99 lumps?
http://www.ftaclan.net/fluffy/images/big/exterior10.jpg - was my properly done/favourite one and the current crapbox I have is in the link in my sig......
Blobeye-style scoop on the classic shape doesn't do it for me at all, very much a marmite thing as you know. I had a custom one made up in the slightly higher STI7 style, which kept all the curves of the classic while allowing far greater airflow in to the TMIC.

Nice colour Scooby Footlong, I like it in black, guess we just have different tastes though as I love the big scoop. I'm at work for the next week and a bit and I don't have the dyno printout on my laptop so can't say for surre but I'm thinking the torque is 350ft.lbs and 280 BHP with standard turbo and standard internals mapped by Andy Forest. Done 110k and still going strong, pitson #3 never had any issues. I only drive like 2-3k miles a year and had the car for 2 years.
I see you had a mini scoop for you're air intake so i guess you weren't running a panel filter. I tried that and it kept killing the MAF so in the end I stuck with a K&N panel filter.
Anyways, not to worry about that as I'm moving on from the Impreza now, although NESF (North East Scooby Forum) do expect to see me back in 6 months when I'm bored of the 6, haha, their words, not mine.

Very unusual to get such a high torque reading on a 2l lump. Normally you need to be on a 2.2-2.5l especially to be getting torque readings higher than the bhp but again, I am a bit rusty. I think the uk classics must have had the precat fitted for emissions as I never had one on any of my JDM classics, specialized in JDM only. I know Andy F, bought a couple of custom turbos off him and he just bought one back off me this week
