Hmm no. Good thought but it's an even coating all over including the backs of the seats. If you wet the sleeve of your jumper and rub it it comes off. Like a layer of lacquer of some sort. Elephant-Scrotum-in-a-Can maybe. Unless maybe the natural oils seep out over time and reach with the air...

Actually I'm sure that a previous owner had dyed / treated / sealed them as you would with normal leather not realising you're not supposed to do that.

Could it be mould? Do you keep your car outside?

Yeah I do. It was like that when I got the car and don't know about the previous owner (although I have spoken to him). It's a shiny waterproof coating as you find on normal treated leather I'm sure. Doesn't matter now as it's gone and back to how it should be :)
