Knockhill killed my brakes

Post by Chorlton » Mon May 14, 2012 10:28 pm

Well I've had a fun afternoon :bash:

1hr private 1-2-1 performance tuition at Knockhill with Jonny Adam (ex BTCC driver) :bigblink:

8 laps, not even 100% on the brakes & they we're smoking like the Williams pit garage :FIREdevil:
Seriously, I had to do 2 extra laps using no brakes to avoid a fire !
I've never seen so much putrid smoke come off front brakes in my bloomin life!

Everything on the car was checked over before I went up & TBH the track was mildly moist so the RS6 would have burst into flames in 4 laps had it been dry & I been less gentle on the warm up laps

I've so far ordered:
2 x new std discs
1 x set of HEL lines
1 x set of Ferodo D2500 pads
1 x Qty of DOT 5.1 fluid

I'm back on track on the 26th & want to make damn sure the above is enough to not only avoid a repeat but ensure I can whopp ass :rocker:

I'd like to know if anyone knows of an after market brake master cylinder I could order too?
Or indeed anything else brake wise to help me stop "das boat" :biggrin2:

Cheers in advance guys

C

Hi mate

Receipts with car shows motot factor jobbies
I took a gamble it all would be good enough for instruction & could wait to fit all new after.
I lost

Know of an aftermarket bolt on master cylinder?

if you want great brakes why not go for the c6 upgrade?
Cheap pads would not have helped you at all so changing just these will help. What fluid you go for?

Cooling ducts, sounds ideal, thanks.
ferodo 5.1 for no other reason than matched the pads used
Pads came in at £150 for complete front axel set inc delivery - http://www.motorsportworld.co.uk/framef ... roogle=yes

Guess unit 20 will take visa on the phone & post the ducts as I'm in Jockland & he's south of Manchester
I will call & ask later this afternoon & might as well ask about master cylinder at the same time

Think it was old fluid, worn discs & el cheapo pads
live & learn

There's no data that the Phaeton ducts are effective. I have heard mixed reviews to say the least.

Carbotech pads seems to be the choice of people whose opinion I trust.

I have the C6 brakes and they are VERY competent.

I think the master cylinder upgrade is overkill. You will see you won't need it once your brakes are sorted.

I'm not sure about the DS2500 - we got through a new set (down to the metal) in a day at Donnington, and that was on a 1400Kg scooby. We were disappointed to say the least. But they did work very well while they lasted.

the b5 lads really rate the ds2500. think sonny uses them in his b7 and he does a fair few track days.

ha ha... they're some great photo's of shredded pagid blues on here... is common for the 6 to eat a full set of front pads on a track day. Makes it kinda expensive but thoroughly fun day. just take a couple of spare sets of front pads with you for the journey home.

i had DS2500 on my TTqs and did Brands Hatch on them ... they were superb ... would do 20mins sessions without fading ... but they did get hot, melted the paint on my calipers and the heat undid the wheel bolts and my wheel nearly fell off !!

so check your nuts !
