The EGT (exhaust gas temperature) sensor has a big impact on the fuelling, but if it (or the mixture) was that far out of whack, then you'd have other DTCs come up.

Unless they are talking about the lambda / O2 sensors? They need to be a bit more specific.

P0741 is the same as 17125. TC not locking up. Could be ATF level. I suspect the £4k they are talking about is for the part only.

They need to stop diagnosing problems by sticking their finger in the air. To check the car, get out logging the MAFs and fuelling with a Vagcom or similar OBD2 reader.

Yep 4K part only. Just checked. Gulp.

This is Audi so they should be using the Vagcom. I'll get the level checked and hope its just a minor problem

You might as well change the ATF. At least that way you can evaluate the condition of what's coming out. That will give you an indication of the box's health.

They will have diagnostics gear, but be too lazy / incompetent to take it out on the road in the car. And less likely to be able to evaluate the data.

Probably the gearbox code has been there for some time and you simply haven't noticed. And if you didn't know you'd probably motor on for many more miles not noticing anything wrong. Ignorance is bliss sometimes. Not so much with the EGT issue, that can ruin your cats.
