Rs6 Saloon

Post by 480bhp » Mon Sep 20, 2010 3:53 pm

Hi All,

I'm trying to find a suitable saloon to buy, trawled the usual (pistonheads, Autotrader and dare i say it ebay!)
But there's not too much choice, looking for one in either Blue,Black or Grey.
Looks like there was a nice one for sale north of the border, but it's been snapped up already, 56k fash, new gearbox, brakes tyres etc.

If anyone can point me in the direction of anymore it would be appreciated :)

Budget is pretty flexible but it seems 14k should land a decent one

Thanks
Chris

Two options, take a punt at a cheap one but be prepared to throw a load of money at it or what I would suggest is, hold fire for a nice one around 18-19K or so.

Approximately 200 saloons were brought to the UK so that little bit harder to find.
Daytona Grey (C5) RS6 saloon, but just a little better...

Guy's feel free to correct me if i'm wrong
Out of the issues most people have had with their cars, the only one that really concerns me, and i'd consider bad luck if i land myself with car that develops it, is the Gearbox.

Things like the dampers dont' bother me, as soon as the stock Drc plays up, whether that be the day i buy it or after a year or so, i'll just replace with coilovers, the £1500-2000 expense has been built in to the budget for 1st year repairs

The alternator isn't really a problem, again it's an expense you don't want but it could go at any time, could buy a minter for 20k and the alternator could still pack up the day after you buy it.

Brakes and tyres are a bargaining tool for the sale, worn out and you want to be saving £1500 or so, new and it makes the car more saleable.

Now i don't want to come across as knowing it all, as i'm sure i know less than most on here when it comes to speifics about the RS6, but the points i make above could be true of anycar despite a 10k sale price or a 20k sale price.

Some other things i'm keen to check up on are the past history, service history, correct maintanence, cambelt change or changes for those approaching 8 years.

I'm keen to hear peoples thoughts on the prices though, Book price for 2003 80k car is 12k on a forecourt

Any Advise people can give me would be much appreciated.

A gearbox service every 20k is a good preventative measure and on most enthusiasts cars this will have been completed by MRC or Unit 20 etc...

These guys can also perform a healthcheck for you over a potential purchase?

you want to buy one that has had millions of pounds spent on it ... thats the key (if your not fussed about miles)

IMO, someone who has spent thousands on their car, will be reluctant to let it go for £14k unless they are loaded, or really want a change and so happy to get rid

if you buy cheap on an RS 6 you will likely pay twice

UNLESS you have done your home work, which fair play to you, it seems to have AND bargain this into the price ... but to expect to buy a well sorted, no issues RS for £14k will be tough

put it through a MRC health check before you buy it ... it might come out with all sorts of leaks (oil, intercoolers etc) which will require £thousands of repairs ... thats aside the obvious ones like gearbox,DRC, brakes/tyres, alternator

My last two RS 6's (of similar age) had leaking rocker cover gaskets (engine out) and leaking intercoolers ... (and dodgy DRC & failed alternator etc etc etc)

you dont want to open that up for debate on here !

i have no doubt you can get an RS 6 saloon cheap nowadays

the challenge is to find a good one, that means does not need a couple more grand of work

get yourself a GOOD health check done on any car

Yeah that one does look good, out of all the Avant's i've seen the dark grey ones with anthracite wheels really do stand out.
Only thing that puts me off, is the 85k and still on the original gearbox, could last another 85k but from what i've seen the gearboxes can go from as little as 30k so 85k is closer to a replacement than i'd like, shame as the car itself looks really well.

It does seem a bit Russian Roulette with the Rs6 though, from what i've seen so far, the ideal car needs to have had at least the following changed in the last 12 months to be considered a good buy. cambelt, discs, gearbox and coilovers

There is some of these about too, shame i missed the one last weekend, it had all that and more done in the last 6 months

I'm budgeting 7k for repairs in the 1st year and to bring the car up to a good standard, does this seem realistic?
I know i could raise the purchase budget and reduce the repair budget, but that doesn't leave too much should something major go wrong, don't get me wrong, 7k isn't a limit for repairs, it's just what i'm expecting to spend so any less would be a bonus.

what kind of mileage would people put a limit on, at the minute i'm looking for sub 70k, but it seems the search broadens once i lift the limit to 85k.

I will sound like a heretic, or a fool, but I got my 54K miles 03 Avant back in early May, on ebay, for £14.5, with FSH.

It has been serviced since by Amd who did not find anything wrong with it. Cambelt has 20K miles and 3 years, so will wait until next year.

I looked on Auto trader, pistonheads, and obviously ebay for a 2/3 months and the right opportunity came along. The thing is with ebay is that you don't hand the cash until you're satisfied the car is as described. After that, the risks are exactly what 480bhp describe.

Famous last words, but it has been almost 5 months and 4.5K miles (which is 4 times what the previous owner had done in more than a year, and the reason he sold it) and it has been great.

The only spending has been 4 new tyres (but that's because I sent the wife to a high performance driving course day, which completely killed the tyres) for less than £700 if memory serves, and the replacement of the RNS-d by a RNS-e.

And fuel of course. Lots of it. :D

If you have 7K in reserve to spend on top if needed, then I'm not sure what you are worried about.

if you're prepared for a big repair bill then buy the best cheap one you can find i recon as like you said there will likely be issues with all!

miles - dont be put off! I bought my Plus with 100k on the clock ... gearbox is tight as a nut, no faults and freshly serviced

best thing to do if put a warranty direct policy on the car for £750 and if the gearbox does go bang then your sorted ! they cover it up to 130k miles !
