Car feels slow... Oh no, wait, it's not.

Post by Shoppinit » Tue Oct 27, 2009 11:36 am

I finally had enough of the uncertainty and put the car on a rolling road.

Results:

462PS @ 5935
385PS at the wheels.
583Nm @ 3118 (approx, because the autobox screws up the calculation, apparently)

So I'm officially used to the car's performance then :(

Weird thing is, I felt a bit like this myself. I only took the car in for its 20k service at MRC and the thing was WAY faster when I got it back. In fact it almost felt like it had been mapped! I have no idea what thay did during the service, but I tell you it was marvellous afterwards and still is now - so much so, that I have held off from getting a map!

I was tempted. I was offered a tailored ECU and TCU map on the spot, but I don't make decisions under pressure :)

But you did make a decision - not to get it mapped. Wrong decision IMHO!!

After reading Quisha's comments on the American forum about the longevity of the transmission when chipped, I'd say you made the right decision!

to be fair, the gearbox is weak line even in standard mode...and getting the TCU mapped along with the ECU will reduce the added stress

I agree. I have researched various forums and it seems that there are plenty people suffer gearbox problems that do not have a re-map, basically proving what David said above. My car is mapped to 570bhp by MTM and the gearbox is still going strong after 25,000 very enjoyable miles.

I think the weak point is the torque converter. The box is pretty strong and what kills it (and the TC) would seem to be nasty burned and contaminated oil. Hence the importance of regular ATF changes.

I'm still thinking about it. To be honest, if the price had been right, I probably would have done it there and then. But it's been an expensive couple of weeks already :) That rolling road was 400 miles from where I live;

The gearbox on mine went when it was stock @36,000 miles roughly. Although saying that who can be certain that one of the previous owners hasn't had it chipped? ;-)

Funny you should say that. I noticed yesterday that there's a value you can read with the vagcom that tells you how many times the ECU has been programmed.

I saw Minhea do it with his vagcom. I can't find it now.
