Dan, take a look on this page:

http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible_pg2.html

Scroll down about a third of the way down to the 'Tyre size calculator'

If you put in there on the left where it says 'current wheel/tyre' 255/35/19 and click calculate. Then on the right where it says 'new wheel/tyre' enter 275/30/19 and click calculate. Then click 'calculate difference' and below will be a graphic showing the circumference difference between the two (current tyre in grey and new tyre in red outline). You will see from that, that the 275 is actually smaller! This compensates for the increase in width and is probably why my tyres haven't rubbed.

I still cannot however explain why yours have rubbed, sorry!

The 275/30's will also mean that the speedo and mileometer overestimate slightly more (aeach turn of the wheel takes you slightly less far), and also will give a slightly harder ride (less flex in a shallower wall - there was a long thread on this recently.

Whilst I understand everything that's been said here two things occur to me.
1) If someone fitted tyres to my car that rubbed I'd be back there immediately, I wouldnt have even gone home!
2) Just because you ordered that particular make and size doesnt matter, your tyre place has a responsibility to you to ensure the car is safe! Unless they told you it was rubbing and was unsafe and you still took it?

This is very true!

I forgot to mention that when my Vreds were fitted, although the 2 fitters didn't test-drive the car, they did at least check for rubbing while the car was up. I think that I would be having words truth be told.

I once had a set of the old style Eagles fitted on my old 2.4v6 A4 avnt, the fitter had real problems balancing the tyres, but eventually he said he done it. paid up mand left. when driving home, if i got up to orover 90mph, the car shook itself so badly that you coyuld not drive it! I went back to the tyre fitter and told him,and he said- " yeah it thought that might happen, i didnt think id got it right!!". I told him to stick the old tyres back on and that i would be going elsewhere. he said he wouldn't. so i phoned my card people, explained whet had happened, they spoke to the guy and i got the tyres for free. I went to another fitter up the road who re fitted them tested the car and al was fine! Moral- always take the fitter out and scare him shitless- just to show him how important it is for your tyres to be fitted properly- i still use the second fitter, they look forward to having a blast in the beastie!
It's all Bollox.

I thought, that it rubs at the outside, because my car is low...that was a big misstake by me

now I get the conti sport contact and there is many more space !!!

the dunlops are 270mm....

Just wondering:

I thought the initial number was the tyre width? I assumed all 255 tyres were the same width. How can it rub if some people have fitted 275s??? So, is a 255 not always 255mm wide? Or is it the tread width rather than the actual tyre width?

Whoa Dan!! That looks f*cking well sweet!!!

Time for me to upgrade to the C6 wheels methinks! I think Audi did a fantastic job designing these wheels.

Damn that looks good! :notworthy:

What tyres do you have fitted now?

ok now I'm dying to hear. I wanna go for 275s but now theres all this talk of 'rubbage' I'm paranoid now. I cant afford to shell out 800 quid on a brand new set and find out theyre fouling all over the place.

Any concensus which 275s fit and which dont? I will soon be making the change to H&Rs but currently running on DRC...
