New S1 owner.

Post by speedicar81 » Fri Jul 07, 2023 2:34 pm

Hello, .
Recently purchased a 2015 S1. Going through the car bit by bit, to satisfy myself that it is what I hoped it would be, as far as operation is concerned, appearance-wise it is fine, in Misano red, relatively lightly specced, which suits me nicely.

The fondness for things mechanical has been with me for 60+ years. Avid collector and professional restorer of classic continental motorcycles made between years 1973 and 1983, I have spent happy hours in the company of Laverda triples, M Guzzi V twins, Ducati bevel L twins and BMW R90S models, both in smoke and orange. Motorcycle carburettors also formed much of my work which extended to Dellorto and Weber car applications. Retired at 75, bikes disposed of over the years and an olde 1959 Dot trials bike is left, which reminds me of happy days gone by and the work ahead to complete its restoration
On the 4 wheel front, have enjoyed a lot of different cars over the years including a BAM engined S3, 1988 Porsche 911 with Option 491, and a Boxster 3.2 S manual.

Getting on in years now, so carefully considered a last car, something small and nippy: an S1 is not an obvious choice for an octogenarian, but it was mine. Not regretted it one bit, and fettling it is enjoyable, not cheap, but enjoyable. Last job was the Haldex unit: oil was clean, pump filter clogged, rebuilt and replaced with new O rings, refilled and the pump "relearn" process completed and all good thereafter.

So, look forward to reading and learning from members, whose knowledge of this car is very much more than mine. Thanks.

Welcome !.. excellent intro, I read with great interest, the bikes immediately got my attention.

I'm a bit younger at 60 and riding all my life, well as long as I could legally.. and illegally some lol.

Your story echos me and my mates to an extent, we were more into two strokes as lads and spent our time stripping, porting, polishing anything we could get our hands on, Stan Stephens, Koni, Micron etc made some money from us lot.. Motorcycle Mechanics was my read, devoured twice monthly. You'll remember that for sure, the tear down and rebuild photos for that months project were pure porn.

Last project, I refurbished a sorry state ZX10R Gen 1 a couple of years ago, no major engine or gearbox works, but brought her back to life and lost a few Bob en-route to selling her on, as you do.

Guy, I knew pretty well owned a lovely Orange Jota back in the day, and I'm sure that's what switched me on to large capacity 4 strokes, I used to drool over it thumping away

I'm envious of your trial bike. The last DOT I saw was at the Scottish Motorcycle Show a couple of years ago. It looked amazing and had a white tank, sure I've a pic of it somewhere.

Lost out on a sorry state but original XT250 a few months back, just pipped at auction on EBay, damn !.. Gold rims and Ally tank, a ripe project missed, second hand prices are just crazy, 500s are off the scale.

I'm down to one bike now, BMW HP4, which I was tracking last year, now back in road mode, van and track kit sold last year, too. The closest I got to owning a classic beemer was a Tamiya kit model of an RS100RT, lol..

Where are you located, close to Glasgow ? I hope, and I can feast my eyes on your DOT sometime (that sounds dodgy).. Found it !!

10R complete, looked nothing like that when I picked her up.. most of the panels were painted by Bikepaints in Cupar, peerless work by Ali... I tracked her about 7 times, and despite being 16 years old, there wasn't much that passed me. The old bird could hold her own against all the 200 brake modern appliances.

Cheers. Stu..
