HanKook Tyres extreme wear

My 2020 has just been into the dealer for a different fault, however, they have given me a report on the tyres as being 50% worn, Hankook s1 Evo2 on 19's. Now, 50% depends on what they are measuring against, however, the most tread depth shown is 5.5mm, according to the dealer, the tyres come with 8mm new
I make that 2.5mm use so far, that's not bad I hear you say, well, the car has done 500 miles and that's been a easy 500 miles as part of running in...has anyone any ideas, I am a little stumped unless the geo is way out or the tyres from the factory were only 6mm, which would be well below what is normal for a new tyre. the wear across the tyres is fairly even, 5mm on fronts and 5.5mm on rears. I thought the dealer may have been pulling a fast one with the gauge they were using, so I got them to use another one and they got the same readings.
At this rate I will be lucky to get 1500 miles out of a set of tyres which does not seem right, this is my first RS4, I had a 2017 TTRS below and got 12k out of the tyres on that one
Help!! tyres every 1.5k would be insane unless I was tracking it

Hmm that’s odd .. I got over 20k on my first set of Hankooks and have done over 15k on my second set .. tyre depth is currently 3.2 mm on the fronts and 5mm on the rears so will replace shortly as have my MOT in April. Sounds like your wear is VERY excessive!

its feels that way, and I would understand if I had been driving hard, but quite the opposite, I have been taking it easy for the first 1000 miles, its frustrating as I want to give it a bit of a drive, but have not got to enjoy it yet as have not reached a good run in period.
Thanks for confirming what you got out of yours, mine seem way way off

The big unknown is the tread depth when you took delivery (I assume).
Do they have any cars in their showroom with the same tyres you can measure?

Strange you should mention that, I got an email about 2 minutes ago from another dealer confirming that they have 8mm on new tyres (they went and measured) so it looks like it is the worst case of 2.5mm per 500 miles. There is something very not right here, but it’s hard to work out what when the tyre wear is even. My dealer is trying to avoid any real discussion on this one, I had given them until Monday to come back to me with a plan on what next

I'm aware that tyre manufacturers compete aggressively to have their products fitted OEM - as there is a good chance that the owner will replace 'like for like'. It's interesting here that my current RSQ3 came with Bridgestone Potenza s005 and they looked 'half worn out' on the day of delivery 23/10/20, I've done 2000 miles since then and note that they don't feel great in the wet already.
Having a quick surf it looks like this could be a wider issue - brand new Contis' with 6.5mm of tread depth for example:

Do your self a favour and replace them with Michelin pilot sport 4s
Youll be amazed and the difference in grip and longevity

Interesting you should mention this. My car came with Contis with just under about 7mm tread.
I will replace with Michelin PS4 or PS4S. All the reputable reviewers put them at the top of the pile.

My RS4 is running 20" wherls with 275 30 tyres. Due to the small tyre walls they are quite prone to the tracking getting knocked out with the crappy pot holed roads in the UK.
Make sure you take the car to someone who really knows what they are doing and have all four wheels aligned. Alignment of the rears first acts as the foundation for then aligning the fronts.
Being a multilink suspension system make sure they check the wheel camber not just toe in / out.
Also look at your tyre wear every couple of weeks or more it may seem a pain but realignment will be cheaper than a set of new tyres!

Where is good for tracking etc, I have no idea what the idea figures should be.

You need to ask for a '4 wheel alignment check', up here in the Midlands its about £70, I've used these people a couple of times

Having all the wheels pointed in the same direction with the correct geometry makes a real, tangible difference too.

I agree with RS4John, after noticing wear on my on the inside of my NSF and having a 4 wheel align the steering was noticably lighter. I couldn't believe the difference.
I would look for a local specialist tyre / car perfomance centre. Look at the cars parked outside. My local tyre centre recommend one to me once I mentioned camber and caster angle as that's beyond most people.

Same here just had mine in for a software update, the health check video they sent me shows the tread on my Contis (20”) at 5.5mm all round after 2500 miles. I too assumed there would be 8mm when new but they must have been much less.
