Ooooo, very nice! Great reading.

How do you think this will damage VW/VAG based on what you know?
Is it true that there's only about 2% profit on the most of VW's range?

I think they will be fine.
Might have to delay the new Veyron and finally sell SEAT but otherwise they are big enough. Apart from the press, does anyone really give a toss?

Interesting to see "upper body" is such a large part of R&D. Makes sense, interesting to see it in writing.

I guess not. You're right, no one really cares. It'll be forgotten very soon. But I do stand by my notion of the death of the diesel ICE... and I'm 50/50 on criminal cases being brought against those responsible for the ECU software sign-off.

But the point is, VWG could not justify the cost to make their engines compliant so frig the results. But if there was greater collaboration in the automotive sector then it would be cheaper for all to do so.

I mean, would anyone seriously give a toss if the 320d/C200 cdi/A4 2.0TDI/XE 20d all had the same generic 4pot oil burner??

They all have the same ZF8, so what diff does it make?

Very true, throw enough money and brain power at emissions and it could be solved. VW spent about €14B on R&D in 2014 and they couldn't solve the diesel emissions issue but as a whole, the industry and a €100B spend limit could probably get it done.
I just cannot see that sort of collaboration happening but I am an angry and hateful person.

You mean.... Like.... The audi engineered normally aspirated high revving V8 in the RS4 B7?

Was that a USP?
Why doesn't audi give it to the beemer to OEM?

of course there will still be USP's which OEM's should strive for, be that engines or else.

but there is also generic parts that are best served en mass ... ZF GB a good example, countless more ... a generic 4pot oil burner should be another ... all the stats, MPG/Co2/PS/Nm are all near enough the same that a customer can tell no difference in engine going from a Audi/BM/Jag/Merc

JLR just spent £0.5bn on a new engine manufacturing centre to build ingenium engines and gain engine independence .... If Bosch or someone else just supplied the market with one, that £0.5bn could have been spent on the CX-75 !!

What fascinates me is how VW came 'clean' with its top brass admitting 'dishonesty'. I mean when have you ever heard people in the top jobs in any industry / sphere be quite so candid when it comes to fraud?? It just never happens. My take on this is that it was all triggered by the publication of the 'Yates memorandum' by the US Department of Justice in early September, the essential effect of which, I understand, is to tighten up severely the rules and sanctions for personal liability in the US if the company you run has committed a criminal offence. Whereas before in the US individuals could be spared if they and the company co-operated fully with the authorities, now in the case of corporate fraud there is no such automatic immunity, and I would suspect only if responsible individuals came forward themselves, fessed up completely and co-operated fully might the US authorities even entertain a plea bargain of sorts.... Waiting until being found out was not an option any more for VW execs...

So, basically what happened was the Yates Memo came out, VW top brass saw it, shat themselves, got advice and fessed up PDQ...openly admitting dishonesty - quite remarkable.

What, you might ask, would a German executive have to worry about with US law, especially as the German constitution prohibits extradition to the US? Well, in the past, the US has got round this problem but issuing an interpol red notice against the individuals concerned, which means the moment they step foot in a EU country, like Britain, which does extradite to the US they can be arrested and the extradition process begins. Basically, the VW top brass knew they they would be stuck in Germany forever if they didn't fess up....

Like I say, extraordinary!
