It just keeps getting better!

Does it sound much better now or was it just the updated front end you wanted?

I was interested in the Google Maps 3G+ NAV, but was wary of how I could integrate it into the aftermarket sound system as the new head unit didn't have a low level line out.

With my previous install I was always bothered that the line out from the old head unit could be better as a direct digital feed, so as soon as I found out about the DA1 to extract the signal from the MOST loop then it became a bit of a no brainer as the NAV option would give me the digital feed. Sound is MUCH better now - getting to where I want it to be.

Need to do a bit of tuning and fiddle with the DSP now.

If anyone is at the VW Stanford Hall show today I'll be there on the A5OC stand. Come and say hello.

Dammit, I didn't know that was today. I live about 10 mins away, but I'm in London this weekend!

So whilst I've been happy with the looks of my car from the front and side, one thing has always irritated me - the rather crappy S5 rear valance - a boring lump of grey plastic. I ordered a duplicate to try to customise, but soon succumbed to the inevitable. There is only one rear valance I truly like and that is the one on the RS5. I knew this could be done after seeing a project by rudiyoda, but it would mean surgery to my Capristo which had always put me off, but after consulting Luke @ Jabbasport he was convinced he could sort that out.

So, after taking inspiration from rudiyoda's excellent thread and sourcing the parts from llBen it was rear valance time and some surgery! This is a rather long post and rather picture heavy!

I collected the bumper from Ben and took the undertray section to be wrapped to match the front.

Image

Image

Image

I really do like this brushed metal wrap. Whilst out I took the car over to Jabbasport to have the back boxes taken off so the bumper could be fitted. Once that was done I took the car over to Martin Bradley to start the process. First we had to get the old bumper off which was surprisingly easy...

Image

Popped the lights out...

Image

Image

To make the new bumper fit there was some refinement required, some packing of some areas, trimming and removal of others, but the main thing was the need for new brackets...

Image

Then the new bumper was put on - like I said, some packing pieces were required to bring the panels flush, but nothing major. The bumper once on showed the difference which needed to be addressed with the use of a special tool which was like a piston with a hand pump - this was placed between wheel arch and main body to force the wheel arch out...

Image

Once the arch was lined up it was a case of filling and profiling...

Image

Image

Image

Bit of work to adjust the lug holes and put packing pieces in...

Image

Once lined up, then fill and sand until lined up...

Image

Image

Image

Once everything was lined up it was time to start preparing for painting...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Then the painting began. I mixed up the paint - this is what makes Meteor Grey...

Image

and then let Martin get on with what he does best...

Image

Image

Then brought her out into the sunshine...

Image

Refitted the rear lights...

And finally put the rear valance and chrome exhaust rims on...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Part 1 was complete. Now just needed to get the Capristo back boxes modified and back on. Over to Jabbasport. Below are the backboxes prior to modification...

Image

Luke had to adjust the angle, protrusion length and placement of both the brackets and valves. By the end of the day the backboxes were modified and fitted...

Image

Huge thanks to Luke @ Jabbasport (again) and Martin Bradley.

Great work. There doesn't appear to be anyway of telling its an S5 now.

You turned an S5 into an RS5 and some. Really like it.

Yep,
Whilst I take my hat off to what you have achieved, you can't help but think a high spec RS 5 (I.e with ceramics), supercharge it and done.

That's if the stronic could take it

I could've, but the reason for the S5 route was the manual shift. Don't want an auto. May be wrong, but don't think there's a charger for the RS5 yet. Plus the journey and learning experience has been great.
