Brake ducts..

Finally got around to installing the Phaeton ducts today...bit of modifying required, but a pretty easy job...

Pretty happy, with the Movits it looks like the air is being directed into the correct place...

Looks good Dave, rough price for a pair? Do you have the part nos. handy? I assume they will fit the S4 upright too?

SO these are the VW Pheaton ducts?(think they will fit the A8 too)

Do you have the part.nr?

Looks quite good to me....

Here's the part numbers..

VW Phaeton
3D0 615 447D - cooling duct left
3D0 615 448D - cooling duct right

3D0 615 311C - splash shield left
3D0 615 312C - splash shield right

...You also need some 6mm bolts to fasten it all together - I imagine these are also orderable - I forgot so had to make a trip to the local hardware store and cut some down...

Installation requires cutting down the splash guards as you can see in the first pic...a nice hacksaw and metal file required...

I think total part price came to about 60quid...

Dave, this is the best post I have seen for a long time. That's really neat. I was going to connect some right angle bends to my existing backing plates but there is nowhere to run the hose.

So, its the Phaeton splash guards you have to cut? You just remove the original RS4 ones?

VW are going to be very puzzled by a sudden run on Phaeton parts :)

Thanks so much for this. You can have the best brakes in the world but if they get hot as they do on the track, it damages everything.

Another question. It looks like 4 6mm bolts per side. Do you need nuts or are there welded ones?

A good "top tip"
A job for next week I think.
Thanks Dave

Yep, it's the splash guards you need to cut...I actually cut it top and bottom, so it's really now just there to hold the air duct - you don't need to cut the top, but I didn't want it getting in the way of any air flowing to the top of the disc...I didn't have any splash guards on at all before - the original RS4 ones were removed when I got the Movits fitted.

There are 4 6mm bolts holding the plastic duct to the splash guard, then two to hold the splash guard to the upright...no bolts..I just threadlocked them and tightened them up (there are no nuts on the original splash guards either - you can re-use the existing splash guard bolts if you have them).

They would actually be far more effective if the plastic air duct 'scooped' from a bit lower down - scooping clean air from under the car...but hey, it's better than what's there as standard (ie. Nothing) !!

Dedicated hose is probably better, but much harder to do...

Really helpful Dave, cheers. I've got no excuse now not to try it myself!
When you've tracked it at Croft next weekend let us know whether you notice any difference with regards to brake fade etc. with the extra cooling :thumb:

Will this mod be ok inside stock 18" wheels?

Brake fade is not a problem with Movit or AP brakes but they get much too hot (over 700C) and wear down pads and crack discs. The cooling should fix that at least.

Yes...I'm still running stock wheels...although I have got spacers (but that's due to my 380mm discs, not the ducts)

Won't get fade on track - didn't do last time, but hopefully the ducts will give a bit more life to the discs and keep the temps down... :D

why do you need spacers for the 380's Dave?

I dont have any on mine! :)

Ducts look well, they should work very well with the wheelarch liner mod and Sportec front grilles I have, must order up a few bits from the VW dealer.

Yeah...I've also got the sportec grills in and my own 'dremel' mods to the wheelarch liner ;-)

No spacers ???...Really ?...my calipers foul the standard wheel without spacers (well, that's what Gordon told me at least!) - maybe the bells you have are slightly different?
