Revo trials and tribulations

Okay I'm new here with an S3 and wondering which tuner to go to to get more lbs/ft. I'm thinking of doing the Revo trial but worried the car doesn't revert to stock as claimed and also concerned that if I go with the trial I may rule out options with other tuners. AmD looks interesting as they have introduced serial port uploading and a switchable/ undetectable (they claim) tuning solution. Otherwise, it's Jabba, APR, Oettinger, etc. I realise it's ultimately a matter of personal prefernce but I wondered if any of you had any views on this, particularly whether the Revo trial is to be avoided?

I did the revo trial in a A3 1.8T. It did seem to revert back to normal after 5 hours. Well, 40/50bhp suddenly disappeared. I'm not a techie, so I don't know whether electronically it really reverted back to the way it was. I bought the Revo software afterwards, as it is switchable. The others may well be better if you don't need the switchability. Not familiar with AMD's new serial port tuning. I would be very interested in how you get on, as I am seriously thinking of changing to an S3. The "at first fun" understeer in the Revoed A3 1.8T, starts to become annoying after a while. Anybody, now how I can cure this in a relatively simple manner? Maybe, dropping the front tyres a few PSI? Anybody done this?

As I understand it, the Revo trial permanently changes your ECU code. Basically they program in a timer which temporarily adds a table of numbers to your map, giving you the performance increases you need. When the timer expires the numbers are all changed to zeros, so effectively your original Audi map is unchanged: Back to stock.

There's no reason why this should prevent you going to another tuner. Anyone using the same technique would simply reflash the memory thus overwriting the Revo code. Anyone using more conventional 'chipping' techniques would replace or mask the memory chip with theirs.

Although I don't have experience of Revo, I'd say that their trial system is an excellent idea and would recommend it. Also the Revo tuners have been spending a lot of effort on the 1.8T engine so their 'program' ought to be quite good.

My "other" car is a 1.8T which has had "the treatment".

I know what you mean about understeer but I suppose that this is to be expected putting all that power and torque just through the front wheels.

Looking at the prices of second hand cars the suggestion to look at an S3 doesn't sound so daft especially when you consider the cost of modifications.

If you need to have a trial then REVO are the only ones offering that at present. I have the REVO remap in my S3 but never had the trial and I am happy with what I have.
The AMD serial stuff should be out soon and does sound like a good solution.

As is often mentioned on all forums, narrow down the method you want, say switchable serial port tuning and you have REVO,APR and soon AMD. Then you need to drive one of the cars as they do drive differently.

Even though I am closely involved with Revo, I don't fully understnd the trial thingy me. What I will say is that I don't suppose it would be out of the question to ask to have a trial and then go back and ask to have the stock code reflashed to the ECU. No harm in asking...

I never had the trial but went for the full monty straight up. The car feels good with the Revo chip - that's all I can say. I'm hoping to get it on an RR soon and will see what the output is. Interestingly, looking at recent RR figures, revo seems to push out less bhp and torque than AmD, APR chipped cars. Typically Revo readings (no other mods) tend to be around 255 - 265bhp but AmD more like 265 - 275 bhp. But then peak power isn't everything of course.

Yes I saw this difference in RR readings from the recent TT RR day run by AmD. Of course AmD may have doctored the readings but that's highly unlikely... I gather there's another RR coming up which is being run by AmD and will have a journalist from Andi Driver attending. Someone suggested to me that it was a ploy to discredit Revo as they have the chance to publish lower RR readings compared with AmD tuned cars, but maybe that was just paranoia?

with the exception of one employee there who seems to have a well known personal problem with Revo, I wouldn't say that AMD are out to discredit Revo - they're too professional for that kind of dirty tricks stuff.

I'm going to the upcoming RR day at AMD - should be a good day.

I had an AMD remap previously and I still have the RR output graphs from AMD - it will be very interesting to see any differences this time.
