Unichip - get it or not?
Re: Unichip - get it or not?
hmmm...isn't aquamist an engine water injection system?
anyway it's custom made cause it's pretty simple

Re: Unichip - get it or not?
how do you operate it?
a manual button or via ECU?
a manual button or via ECU?
Can't beat a bit of boost!
Re: Unichip - get it or not?
you activate the system with a button
but it sprays then only on full throttle

Re: Unichip - get it or not?
As Corky Bell would say Water Injection is too often used as a band aid for a poor system. I don't think thats always the case, especially wth the mappable WI kits that are about now.
Probably not true in this case but I've seen 1.4 corsa with a small turbo bolted on running 9psi water water injection to stop it pinking crap. Thats what Corky is talking about I guess, if the fuelling was right you wouldn't need the WI.
If you used a decent mappable ECU you'd have PWM outputs that'd allow you to map the water injection ( or nitrous or a intercooler spray ) in conjunction with the fuel & ign maps, giving *alot* of control over whats going on.
E.g. you could map an intercooler spray to only activate about say.. 12 psi and intake temp. is above a certain level and throttle is above a certain level...
Water injection & nitrous can be mapped even further, allowing you to adjust the fuel/ign maps when they are active to get the full benefit.
Its just a more complete package, rather than have the stock ECU trying to do its bit, the unichip trying to do its bit and the water injection ecu trying to do its bit you tie them all together into one, so each operation knows what the other is doing...

Re: Unichip - get it or not?
Crafty - you keep mentioning the mappable ECU, is that something that can be considered for a S3 do you know?

have you got information on this?

Re: Unichip - get it or not?
A mappable ECU will work on any engine,
there is actually a fair amount of choice out there, but for turbo applications you must look for the following...
Must be a speed density system - This means that it uses ( or can use ) the map sensor for load. This is a much more accurate way of working out whats going on than a MAF, it also means you can bin the MAF altogether, no more contamination problems!
Have in built boost control - If it doesn't have this you need a seperate boost controller, which is a stupid way of going about things.
You've probably heard or seen MoTeC before, this is often sited as "the" mappable ecu, but whilst its good, its also expensive, over £1700 for the ECU alone last time I looked.
There are cheaper alternatives, DTA have improved their ECUs recently but the software is still somewhat lacking. GEMS from what I've seen is pretty capable.
The system I have had most contact with is called Autronic, its probably as good as MoTeC, maybe a little better in areas. You can read about it here. If you want any more information I'd suggest you contact ATC who can supply, fit and map the units.
There are *alot* of benefits to a mappable ECU, but it does cost more than a straight remap of Motronic, I think the benefits outweigh the extra cost.

 I agree Crafty... hehe...
but as I said aquamist isn't the case... we're talking about water sprays on Intercoolers
Bushy: what information do you need?

IC, well someone was talking about WI

Re: Unichip - get it or not?
watch the movie and you'll know....
Re: Unichip - get it or not?
how can it sense you are on full throttle, what pump, what nozzles, how long does the water last?
that sort of thing
that sort of thing
Can't beat a bit of boost!
Re: Unichip - get it or not?
It has a micro switch, similar to those used with a nitro setup...
20liters of water let you drive hard long enough
the pump is a regular headlamp washers pump
I will install similar setup soon....I'll post some pics then oki?

I ran a Steve Simpson mapped GEMS on my STiV and was very impressed. Dual switchable maps and a whole host of other features. Great resolution too... A real alternative to the MOTEC but it is still not cheap. More GEMS info on my webpage...

Re: Unichip - get it or not?
About £1200-1400 fitted Joules ?
An ex impreza chap eh ? I was very close to buying an Sti V or IV, but running costs, big end problems and gearbox problems finally put me off.
How did you like your time with the Impreza ?
You'll know ( or at least of ) bob rawle then ?
