I don't think the boost is the problem, because like I said, when I had it upgraded, I had the whole engine taken apart and checked out, and every part necessary upgraded so that it would take the pressure with no problems. It's designed to run at 2 bar, I only run it at 1.8 tops because of this exact reason - I don't want it to go pop! I'm hoping it's just one of the pipes, but I don't think it will be. It was literally as I lifted off, it just went "BOOF" and totally lost all power. I'll be so upset if something major has gone, because it really is built like a tank now. The modifications I had done cost an extra £600 just in parts that were upgraded, and that's cash in hand, friend in the business, nudge nudge wink wink material.

£600

Sorry mate I must be confused as setting up one of our babies to run 1.8bar, never mind 2bar, would cost more than £800 in cylinder head parts alone (£1200 to be exact). Then you've got pistons - coz they aint tough enough for the job, turbos, fuelling, intake etc etc ................

Was that £600 a typo then?

Indeed it was my good man! 1600 is more the job! Oops. That's what you get for having a crappy laptop that gets the ump when you type too fast! There's not much left as standard really.

Tio,

Sorry to hear about your car mate but I think I can help

Not sure where you are in the South West but one of my best mates works for Audi here in Milton Keynes as a member of their technical department. As luck would have it he is actually in Bath and Plymouth next week for a two day seminar and afterwards he is visiting his mum who lives in Yoevil. He has offered to pop round and have a look at your RS4

How's that for service?

Drop me a PM with your number and he'll call you back to arrange and let me know when it's convenient

Joshie, mate, the emotion which has just swept over me is immense! FLOODS of tears at such a beautiful gesture! However! My buddy came over today, and reckons he's got an idea of what's up. He used to work for JUN tuning so I'm thinking he's kosher as chicken soup. He won't say what he thinks it is yet, because he hates to be wrong, but my car's gone off on a very sexy transporter (leather seats and everything!), and I'll find out in a couple of days what's up. He's a good boy and won't charge me too much either. But say a BIG thank you to your man at Audi from me! Hopefully my baby'll be back on the road soon! With less boost most probably! OK, here's the story as I understand it from a mad Japanese scientist. As I lifted off, one of the DV's stuck just a lil bit, kicking up the turbo pressure, which put extra stress on the compressor (understandably). I had freak metal fatigue in part of one of the compressor turbine fans, which shattered, took a whole mess of crap right through the system to the cylinders (only two of them), where it mashed the intake valves and put a hefty dent in the top of the piston itself. Unfortunately, in one of the two cylinders affected, it bounced off the piston and smacked into the cylinder wall, cracking it, hence the oily smell afterwards. This is what I understand so far, but the costs of fixing it are as yet unknown to me, and I'm most scared about it! Pistons are coming out in the next day or two so I can actually see the damage, but apparently it's quite catastrophic. I'm told it was a pure freak accident due to a slight crack in the metal which had probably been there since it was made. Scary, but rare so I'm told. Anyone else ever head of this happening?

Needless to say I'm quite gutted

Normally, yes, but even then I'd have to prove that there was emtal fatigue which wasn't caused by me being an exciteable monkey BUT, and this is a big butt here, my compressor was uprated to provide the extra boost, so the turbine fans weren't original, and thus, it's all my fault, and certainly all my problem. Dear Mr Ecklestone, I've heard you once said you don't know how to spend all your money......

It's a sad day but I have been forced to sell my RS4. The fuel bills and tyres, not to mention servicing, were all pretty costly to me anyway, but now with the turbo failure and subsequent rebuild, I'm wiped out. Thankfully, a chap I know through a friend of a friend (nudge nudge), offered to buy it from me for £34,000! Not bad I thought! Bearing in mind it's a late Y plate, avus, 40,000 mile machine with few major modifications other than the now blown up turbos! And my traction system of course. Doesn't have the satnav or any of that gimmickery, but it does have the very lovely alcantara steering wheel and gear knob. Quite pleased with the deal I made, but GUTTED that my baby's gone. Plans for an RS6 ASAP though! Might be a while though! For now I'll have to put up with driving my delightfully naughty and unreliable Mini Cooper S!

£34k

Did he have to rebuild it himself?

Did you get any pictures of the cylinder damage?
Can't beat a bit of boost!
