RE: Ring insurance

And if they catch you filming you'll get barred from the circuit.

Insurance.....

It is a normal road as far as the German authorities are concerned. This means that you will need the same minimum level of insurance cover as you would driving on any other German road. The catch is if you insurance company excluded the Ring either by name or by the 'One way, unlimited speed, toll road' then you are uninsured. This means that you are driving the Ring illegally as far as the German legal system is concerned and you would not have any third party (or comprehensive) cover. In the event you are involved in an accident you will need to pay for your vehicle and any other damage (including third party vehicles if you are at fault).

The question would be if the Ring exclusion would stand up in court (assuming that you've caused a mini-bus to crash and your being taken for £M in a German court).

Most UK drivers ignore the third party issue and go out and enjoy themselves. Last time we went a friend of mine in the insurance business covered my car (effectively track cover) for the 3 days for £200 and I got ADAC membership to cover the recovery.

If you are concerned in anyway regarding the insurance aspect then don't drive the Ring.

Maybe let us have this friends number and we could all contact him. Also ADAC don't cover the Ring anymore, it seems?

Wonder whether my Audi cover will?

I've talked to Paul (who is coming with me and is high up in one of the Lloyds of London companies) and he will have a word with one of the brokers he deals with to sort it out. It will be 'track day' type cover ie there will be no 3rd party liablilty and it will be for a specific value (10K or 20K etc) and will have a excess (normally the first £1000). It will likely cost around 1% of the value of the cover (20K will be £200) but I'll get the details and confirm.

That seems alot of money.

However I have heard rumours of someone that went to Spa and pranged their car, claimed it was done outside and is in big poop, so it must be worth it.

Just hearsay of course, in case they are reading this!

Compared with normal track cover it's cheap (three days track cover would be a lot more than that)...compared to the potential loss it's cheap...compared to your annual policy it's expensive. You pay your money and take your chances.

Jeff that deal sounds good, I pay £101 (£11K value) with Eggar Lawson for just a morning session on track in the UK, a full day would cost £130.

If I was driving on this trip I'd get the cover for peace of mind.

So Jeff, would this be 200 quid(or whatever it works out with value etc) for the 3 days we are out there? I like this idea a lot, since if I was to take track cover they will only do it for the day and I would prefer the option to maybe do a few laps each day as opposed to doing it all on one day...

The prices haven't been confirmed so let's not get excited. I should have a proper figure on Tuesday. The cover would be for all the days that we are there (Saturday till Tuesday) any variation will need to be discussed with the Broker. If I take the S4 I'll take the insurance, if I take the Sylva Phoenix I probable not bother.

Jeff,

Might this be kind of a 'group buy' insurers tend to like to spread their risk by insuring many, the premium is lower as a result...

Sounds like a good deal Jeff...£150-ish for three days track cover...I'll be signing up that's for sure. Haven't been worried about the issue of driving round the ring with no valid insurance but that offer would be too good to ignore.

Defo sounds like a good deal, howeve consider the persepctive & risks etc.

As Jeff initially states above, if you're that worried about Insurance then perhaps don't drive the Ring (of course you really should have some type of 3rd party cover). You're only covered if YOU have an accident & technically a smash that is YOUR fault, as you won't have 3rd party cover on most track day policies, the excess can be much higher that a regular policy, so you'd basically need to have a major smash that's your fault with no-one else involved to take any value in this sort of cover & if you feel you really need it, perhaps driving Nordschleife aint the right place to be driving. I know their are always exceptions, but this is the basics.

That said, for track day cover, the figures Jeff is indicating may be possible are very very cheap, as last time i asked for track cover on the M5, i was quoted £400 per day & that was with a £25K limit & £2.5K excess. I never took the policy out naturally.

Ps. & back on topic, this time next week i'll be making the final preperations for the trip & giving the car a quick washdown ready for departure at 16:30 8)

If any of you take this insurance out be aware that the guy who will be underwritting the policy will be with us.....your not likely to get away with a dodgy claim !

When I have any more info I'll post it here.
