SLOW Returning Revs !! Any advice ??

On a B5 RS4 engine the revs inbetween gear changes are very slow to drop making smooth gear changes near on impossible. It revs statically fine its only really noticable inbetween changes and gets worse the more enthusiastically you drive as you tend to rev higher inbetween changes.

Any advice on how to find it and where to look first ?

Your cluch switch could be gone

It's a trait of the RS engine mate, it is common for the engine to hold on to the revs which makes driving it fast and smooth very hard indeed.

In fact when Plato drove the car on Driven his only real criticism of it was the engine and it holding on to the revs for so long. I find mine the same but you can do get used to it.

after reading your coments and watching that video i'm gutted..Can't believe that there is no cure for this, it totally spoils what is otherwise for me a perfect daily car !!!

Mine doesn't display this trait, as soon as you dip the clutch to change gear, the revs fall away. ( MRC custom remapped ).

Mine has improved so much after the remap too but it's still a feature of the engine.

Get it remapped for improvement!

I had this. Check the switch above the clutch pedal is adjusted correctly to actuate when the clutch is fully UP. It opens a small valve. This can be noticed on the boost gauge at idle (if you have one) or logged on VAG-COM. There is a channel which checks the operation of the switch, either 1 or 0 is logged.
Easy to check visually in the first instance.

If you have VAG-COM you need to log group 066

thanks for all the valuable info...i am having it Vag-commed today so i will post up the results. I actually hope that i have a fault with something like the clutch switch as i would hate to think i have to live with this throughout ownership.

Lightweight flywheel and pulleys would reduce the rotational mass and therefore the momentum of the engine too.

both of you were spot on, changed the little white plastic switch under the clutch pedal ( 10min Job) and all is as it should be, i can actually change gear without it sounding like i'm learning to drive again.

Big Thanks this valuable advice has saved me time and money as it was less than £10 to fix....
