Gents,
Have my B5 about a month now and just had a query about my rear brakes. I included a couple of pics which show the uneven wear on both right and left rear discs. Local mechanic thinks that it's because it wasn't driven for a while before I bought it and that it should clear up. If it's not going to clear up then what are the best cost/benefit options for me - switch to one of the alternative B7/RS6(?) setups I've read about here? Problem is that, as I've just trumped up the cash for the car, I'd like to keep my spend down for the next couple of months... (wouldn't we all )

Yes I would also put that down to the car not being used as often, especially from the rust on the disc and around the pads.

Best thing to do, if your on a budget would be to remove the discs, and get them skimmed by a good machine shop

You'll also need to check the pads, as if you've done a fair few miles, then the pads will also be worn unevenly

If the front is anything to go by, I reckon the back of the disc will be even worse, just my 2p's worth.

Cheers Virdee, yeah I've done about a thousand miles since I got it and there's been an improvement but obviously it's not solved.
I'll have a call around to see what skimming them would cost me - it might not be a whole lot cheaper than getting a full fresh set, especially if I have to do the pads anyway. And I plan to move to one of the better RS6/B7 setups in the future anyway.........

Most of the alternative set ups use standard rear discs and pads which are more than adequate. If I recall correctly, it is only moveit who enhance rear brakes with four caliper upgrade.
Set of reatr pads are about £100 from Audi and far cheaper from Swedish and German or other site sponsors so replace them and discs will clear up with use.

The reason why your disks look the way they do is because you are not using your brakes enough, especially after your car has been sitting for a while. I use my car as a daily commuter and only the occasional track day fully removes the rust rings. No other set up would change any of this - save your money.

If the rust is really bad, which it looks from the pics, then a new set of pads will not get rid of the rust. It will just make the pad wear uneven again, and loss of brake performance, due to not having full contact area.

As Virdee say's get the discs skimmed and fit new pads, the only thing to check before you pay to have them skimmed is that they are not below minimum thickness, if that is the case it's fit new.
