How to tell if the engine is knackered ??

Hi guys
Having bought my RS4 a few months ago, in Hong Kong, i am increasingly troubled by the wear and tear of the car.

The car is quite quick although seems to run out of steam at the top end, but does have a stuttering throughout the rev range.

I bought VAGCOM and performed some logs. The fault scan shows secondary air injection system - insufficient flow codes on both banks ; and EGT short to ground error codes.

The garage i took it to said they thought it might have been clocked ( how the **** that can be done on a digital read out ...) as the general wear on the engine is high !

My recent VAGCOM logs show low peak MAF of 207 ( compared to 280/300 quoted as stock RS4) , requested boost of peak 2,100 mbar ( which seems very high) and actual boost of peak 1,400 mbar ( which seems high in absolute terms but low compared to requested boost above ).

My concern is that the entire thing is verging on a blowout, as it is operating at inflated and unsustainable boost, with massive leaks from the system. If it has been remapped to deliver high boost, that might be masking the otherwise leaking/knackered turbos/engine ?

Can anyone help with suggestions on what further needs to be checked to detarmine if the entire engine including turbo's has been well shagged in a previous life , and that i could be facing an entire rebuild ???

Does a compresssion test or pressure test assist with this problem ?

or i am just paranoid

GULP :?

i had same problem with top end power loss .. turned out to be dump valves ! if it is that go for the uprated alloy piston type instead of the plastic "oem" ones that are fitted ! they are known to perish and fail .

It only takes something as simple as a failed MAF, Bypass Valve or EGT sensors to give the errors you are experiencing. VAG-COM recorded boost is misleading to the uninformed as it includes 1.0 Bar of atmospheric pressure, so you are only showing 1.1Bar peak, which AFAIK is std. As stated above, replace both bypass valves (my advice is to buy OEM 710N valves as fitted to the S3/TT 225), then clear the codes and re-check MAF output. Also, check plug type and condition.

Aha, thanks for the absolute point - I am going through a massive learning curve here from pretty much nil !

I am trying to get my local mechanic to look at the points you raised, thanks Nige.

Interesting point, although i have been so frustrated with tuners here that i have contemplated shipping the car back to Banbury for peace of mind ( then using it in greenock, somewhat closer to you than my current location :D )

cheers
