Advice needed please

I have been offered a 2001 RS4 with only 6000 miles on the clock, the only problem being it has a problem with 1st and 2nd gear but the car still drives.

It has been stood for 4 years and needs a good valet, it has Sat Nav and full leather interior.

How much is a gearbox roughly?

Anything else that you would recommend checking or doing if I decide to buy it?

Cheers,

Dom.

Can the owner support the claim for only 6000 miles? Gearbox shouldn't be a problem on a car so young, neither shoudl the clutch..unless it's sticking for some reason. If it has been stood for 4 years, what preparatory work was done:-

a) Before it was stored and
b) After storage and before it was taken on the road?

Does the interior (particularly the seats and pedal rubbers) show it to be an unused car?

Sorry dunno on the costs of gearbox etc.

Paul

Hey G11DOM... I saw the ad for that car alright. Not an RS owner myself but looking at the photos were not good viewing IMO. If you have a close look there are quite a few little bits and bobs I'd be worried about. Gearbox, six thousand miles... doesn't sound good. Also look at the photo of the airbag... looks quite new to me??? open to correction though. Muck on the wheels. Who buys a car like an RS4 and leaves it sitting up exposed to the elements for four years? Body work looks fine although if I were you I'd crawl all over the thing and get it looked over by a very good mechanic to see if its only the gearbox that needs doing. Look at the first photo on pistonheads... does it look like there is a color match issue on the front fender? Just my two cents..... might be perfectly fine but I'd be sceptical.

I'll be looking for an RS4 in hopefully the not too distant future and I won't be beating down that door.

You are looking at 2k upwards to rebuild the gearbox, but if the car wont select 1st or 2nd at all it may well be more serious and not just synchros, some valid points been made regarding preperation before lay up,i would have a look down the bores etc etc before thinking of running it,6k and a repainted bumper and shagged gearbox would set a few alrm bells ringing but could be ok

Isn't a replacement gearbox an engine out job as well?

I also saw the ad. Judging by the condition of the interior, it is believable that it had hardly done any miles. Those seats looked brand new.

And, for those of us who haven't got a clue what this thread is going on about, the colour was?
