I have a friend who owns an rs6 avant and having a QST tuned 420bhp rs4...in first gear the rs6 leaves me for dust b4 i can get to 2nd gear.....but by the time both my turbos are running the rs6 is long gone.....

i do get quick gear changes...but the automatic rs6 always leaves me...

am i doing something wrong ...??

if i raced an m3 .....from start to stop i am assuming the m3 will get a good start but the rs4 will catch up and accelerate quicker when all turbos are fully operational??

How are you launching the car? what rpm? and are you dumping the clutch? on paper you should have the edge over the RS6 (and definately the M3!)

well in first gear i let it go to 4k rpm....then switch to 2nd gear...but i can only feel the power coming in on 4krpm in the 2nd gear...how do u mean am i dumping the clutch?

Doesn't sound right to be honest - mine is also MTM 420 and is seriously quick in first and second! There is a bit of a delay in first as the turbos spool, but certainly wouldn't say it was slow. A friend of mine has a SMG M3 and the RS4 eats it alive off the mark.

why do you only take it to 4k? it will easily go to 7k before you change to 2nd! you are not getting the full performance out of your car mate by dumping the clutch he means from a standing start holding the revs then releasing the clutch quickley

is that whilst dumping the clutch now that i knw what it means....well i did knw waht it was ....but we call it 'launchin' which really as i have heard burns the clutch

Not a passtime I would advise indulging in........ clutches and drivetrain parts are not the cheapest.....

when i take it to 7k revs ...teh rs6 is already long gone where if i had it in 2nd by say 5-6k revs ....all turbos will be fully blowing......which now can cover up some distance....

The whole reason to let the clutch out quickly is to prevent overheating it - if you try and feed all that power in, it will start smoking without too much effort.

Best best it to drop it at 4k rpm and hang on - change up at 7k if you have traction, or change into second early if you are spinning the wheels (ESP off is a must to get the best launch). As Simon says, your clutch and/or drivetrain components take some punishment if you do this too many times.

ESP Turned off and 4-5k launch slipping the clutch... change at about 6k & 6k again in 2nd... you should get an on-boost launch and an almighty surge and the RS6 wont even know what hit it. You will be long gone

A standard RS4 is quicker across a 1/4 than a standard RS6... so you should easily have him if you are at 420. It is possible you are not running 100% - does the RS4 suffer from boost leaks/poor MAFs like the S4?

*Unless* the RS6 has been chipped & the Transmition also remapped - I believe they can run low 12's (even heard of an 11.9) - in this case - he will time and time again get a perfect launch while you struggle to string everything together perfectly.

Surely this will also depend on how your torque curve looks?

The engine will produce more torque and there acceleration forces in a defined "power band". So the rate of acceleration may be slow between 1500 - 3000 rpm, damn rapid between 3000-5000 rpm and then the rate of acceleration tails off after that point. Always more noticeable on 2-stroke bikes, but there will be a defined torque curve for your engine and chip.

According to the dyno on mine, the max torque is developed at 3620 rpm so either side of that less torque (and therefore acceleration force) is produced. So this would seem to demonstrate that it would be better to change gear at say 4000 rpm and keep the engine within it's power band, rather than utilising the higher revs where the torque tails off?

Dunno if a little knowledge here proves to have been a dangerous thing (as in bullsh*t baffles brains).

i understand fully mate...as thats what i have noticed as more power is booste to teh car between certain revs.... in certain gears... where before 3k revs there is less power and also after 6k revs...so optimum is reached betweeen these revs....and thats when i think the full 420 horses can be utilised at best....

how can i find out if am loosing some horses???

Stick the car on a rolling road. Many tuneer shave them, including QST who did the chip on your car.

Other thoughts might include....not using 99 RON fuel. Poor grip from tyres causing the ESP to cut in, or if the ESP is switched off for the tyres to be slip sliding everywhere?

Mine is MTM mapped and running about 440bhp (Stage II) It starts to come on song much earlier than 4000rpm. I've driven a few standard RS4s which felt sluggish for the first few thousand revs but one of the things that most re-maps do is bring the boost on quicker. Mine is really flying by 3000 and it has eaten a few RS6+ and M3's. I think the advice to check out a few other things is good
