Track Day Tyres

Hi Guys,

Just had a good weekend down at Mallory, srcubbibg the hell out of a set of Goodyear F1's.

Not overly impressed with the grip either.

Can I have some comments on tyres (which can be used to and from a track day) to fit on the 18 inch standard rims.

Yokohama AO48 235x40x18

235 is the optimal width for an 8.5" rim. I would use this size for road aswell if they didn't leave the rims a little exposed (it's the rim design that causes this as they have a large lip, they sit very much like a 265 on the sportec 19x10), I had the yoko's- felt great @28psi hot

They are both street legal.

Michelin pilot cups, a semi slick tyre . Amazing on track once up to temperature. These are road legal although i would advise against using them as an everyday tyre (especially in the wet!) but they will get you to and from the track.

Michelin Ps2s a great all rounder IMO, although i've only had experience with the original Dunlops on the RS4

I have used Toyo proxes t1-s on track in a clio, these are very good in the dry and very cheap, i think some of the guys on here use them on track.

Have you ever considered a spare set of wheels with track tyres on? Sling them in the boot for the road then get the girlfriend/wife/kids to swap them over at the track. (make sure they jack the car up before taking the wheel bolts out though!)

Do michelin do a pilot cup in the corect size?? I was under the impression they didn't.......

Audi themselves use a pirelli corsa but they are 255. Every one I have seen on these tyres seem to get large chunks gouged out of the side of the tyre walls, doesn't look that clever imho.

I've got JR's old Dunlop Super Sport Race tyres and they're pretty good. Made a huge difference to the car's performance round Donnington and then perfectly civilised when I drove back home on them on normal roads. So I wouldn't worry about driving to and from circuits providing its not too wet and you're reasonably careful

Their next outing should be Croft too at the end of April. Maybe see you there

Does this change the overall gearing, with the size as appose to a 255/35/18?

Or am I just being a bit blond...

They are almost identical in rolling radius, you will not feel the difference like you do with a set of 19's.

The profile number of a trye (35/40/45 etc.) is not a fixed height, it actually relates to a percentage of the tyre width (255, 245, 235 etc.) i.e 35%, 40% and so on.

I dunno John, the yokos have good raves about them too, certainly performed very well for me. I also have them on the Exige as standard fit items. They just dont last all that long when used for road miles....

There is another tyre out there of a similar ilke - Toyo 888's. Sorry, dont know if there is a size to fit the rs4 but I will be trying them on the Lotus next time around as they do them in the correct sizes.

Michelin pilots are 265, a little wide but they seem to work.

I have tried the A048s and A038s on the Clio and these are good with a bit of negative camber (-1.. I found the outsides get a little toasty without, much like the Dunlop super sport by the looks of it, thankfully i noticed it before things got that bad!

Any experiences with this TarmacT? I noticed at the Audi drivers day last year this was happening to A048s on a B6 S4.

I would like to try the Dunlop D01Js but first i have some lightweight 19" MTM Bi-motos with 265/30 cups on the way.

From reports on here it sounds like handling suffers with the 19s, Is opinion on this because of the weight or width of the bigger wheel?

I have the Dunlop D01J 235x40x18 fecking excellent, and the are only directional, so you can get the most out of them

Correct tyre pressures with these types of tyres is critical, you have to run them much lower than you would a normal road tyre, somewhere between 28-30 psi hot. A 'normal' road tyre would want to be running somwhere between 38-44 to help with tyre wall fron rolling over. Problem then is that after 6-10 laps they start going off.....
