RS what does it mean?

I was asked yesterday by a passenger, what the RS stood for. I had not really given it any thought until that point, but i assume it is Rally Sport.
However, when you think about it, that does not really stack up, as the car is far more sport than rally, yet it is given the rally suffix over the standard S type.
I'm sure there is a simple explanation somewhere.

So that would be Race Sport, ..that seems far more logical.

The missus says it stands for 'really scarey' but I'm with you Gav, 'raw sprouts' is much better.
