RS4 vs Modified S4(B5)

Hope you guys are not gonna be biased - but I have been driving around in a 420bhp S4 rocket for a year (RS4 turbo's, injectors remap etc etc). The thing is - the mileage is getting quite high & so have been considering buying an RS4 with a view to modifying it later. The S4 has been fantastic & as for performance - Nothing & I mean NOTHING (on 4 wheels) has ever left me behind, So I guess what I am asking is:-

1) Has anyone any experience of Modded S4 vs Standard RS4?
2) What stage RS4 Mod would I need to bring me back to my current S4 performance level?

Thanks

There's a few owners on here who have made the jump from S4's to RS4's...my S4 was standard, so I can't really comment too much on the difference - but I don't regret going for the RS4 one bit!

In order to get 420bhp from an RS4, you're looking at a stage 1 tune....simply a chip....stage 2 adds the full exhaust and sport cats...that should get you about 460bhp or so depending...

500+bhp is attainable....indeed there's a few guys on here who've got it...

I made the jump from an AMD chipped S4 Avant 320bhp something but more importantly 380somthing ftlbs complete with RS4 suspension.

The didn't immediately notice the lack in torque on the first RS4 I test drove, as I nailed it right up the rev range. The chipped S4 with the standard KKK03 turbos simply don't have the puff after 5200rpm and I really noticed how the RS4 just revs all the way to the limiter with no tail off. In fact, in 10 months of ownership I still regularly hit the limiter to my embarrassment as the RS simply doesn't give you that, "O time to reach for an other gear" feeling.

So like I say I didn't notice the lack of torque. You do notice it however when you want to accel in 6th at 60mph.

However, this is well overshadowed by the overall driving feedback/sensation of the RS over the S4. The minute you sit in the car it just feels more 'sporty' I suppose its the combination of the Recarros the perforated steering wheel and gear stick subtle differences in the dials etc. I would never have thought these things would make a difference. Also the exhaust note is more obvious over the stock S4 unit. You will no doubt have at the very least a CAT back system I'm sure, so this may not be to your liking. Then you drive off. Even at 20-30mph you can immediately feel the difference in the steering, gearbox, suspension tyres.

They all seem soo much better than the S4 and like I say I had RS4 suspension. I dare say the tyres make a huge impact. My RS4 test drive came after a test drive in a new M3. I was considering a new M3, RS4 or new B6 S4. There was simply no competition. The M3 was the least satisfying of the the bunch. But this was due to not being able to rev it past 5K (new engine - due to the original blowing up at 3K miles!) The new S4 while a tremendous overall improvement on the old was noticeably low on torque compared to my then chipped S4. I digress, take an RS4 out for a test drive look past the lack of torque compared to your modified S4. For about £1K for the stage 1 tune you can have that back and probably a better reving engine given the better heads etc.

Don't get me wrong B5/B6 S4 owners a fettled S4 in any form is still a great car but its simply not as good as an RS4.

Yep, my old S4 was running the full RS4 kit and was a fantastic car.

The RS feels different in so many ways, yes a std one will be slower, particularly at the botton end as the S4 produces higher tourque low down but it is the opposite at the top end.
However get the remap and milltek and its a different story, you also have the scope for much more potential in the RS.
As well as that the RS feels so much better on the road.

Make the chage, you will not regret it

Maybe you get up too early, which is why you've not met a car thats toasted you yet....there's a thread recently about someone encountering a modded skyline....

There's always someone faster/bigger/stronger/madder....on the road I find its usually the 'madder' one that comes into effect, there's limits as to how much I'll push it on the road....

OK I'll put my two pence on the bar..............

I drive an E55 everyday, have a cupboard full of toys which include more Audis and a Ferrari, and still find the RS4 to be fun and very quick. You really should wait and meet people before launching into them, the guys and girls who use this site are decent, friendly and generous with their time and knowledge, respect that and you will not ofend anybody, take it from me, been around this and the previous forum since 2001
