As some of you may know, I've just bought a beautiful black RS4 with only 2,700 miles on it. I beleive the car to be completely standard and the mileage has been certified.
As a newcomer to the RS4, I have a coupel of questions:
When I first start the car, the engine sounds rather noisey for about a second. I suspect that it is tappit rattle until the oil pressure reaches working pressure. The oil is at the correct level. Is this normal or is it something I should get checked?
Secondly, when accelerating in the lower gears, it is rather juddery during on/off throttle transitions when changing gears i.e when lifting off the throttle the car seems to judder. Again is this normal and if so, when a chip upgrade resolve it ?

Get thee to a tune meister [img]images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]... RS4 engines dont like not being used... so 2700mls in 2 yeras is nothing...actually its bad for the car.. so go and see QST or AmD and get it chipped...fit a short shift anda Quattro Gmbh suspension... and you will be a happy man [img]images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]At5000 mls oil change...and dont use the AVS longlife stuff..Motul or Mobil 1 will do...gear/acceleration, seems to me that the clutch may need adjusting.

But anyway its the best car you will ever own.... so enjoy

Agree with John, except that judder will need looking at quick, as the clutch would only judder pulling away in 1st if that was the problem. Could well be a driveshaft/gearbox problem. Best be safe anyway [img]images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

I'm now 2 weeks into the delights of a black RS4 and I have noticed the same startup rattle. I would say it happens on about 1 in 3 cold starts, and probably only for about half a second, but I have been meaning to pose the same question to the forum.

I don't think the judder is clutch related as it isn't being used at the time. I an inclined to think it is more likely to be a fuel delivery issue i.e overly abrupt fuel cut-off on the overrun....any ideas ?

Right i think i got what it is MAF sensor is faulty, commonn problems and causes misfire at low revs in high gears... Will i think so... just take it back to Listers and get them to check it.

I believe Mass Air Flow only really has an effect on air to fuel ratio when when running at medium to high revs ie. when the ignition is retarded or advanced by the ECU depending on the situation - my MAF problem and several others identified on S4's and S3's occured at high boost/revs and fuelling before you changed gear ie. engine under load and boost requiring a defined mixture of air and fuel.

What sort of judder are u experiencing? Does it feel mechanical, or is it a hesitation when you accelerate in the next gear up?

Paul- I have the same thing. When starting from cold the engine makes a noise for about a second that I can only explain as not normal. I've asked Audi about it and they said it's nothing to worry about...whatever that means.

If anyone can add any colour to this point I'd appreciate hearing too.

It's sort of reassuring to know that other people have the same "problem" with otherwise fine cars. My 2.8 A6 used to do the same when the oil needed topping up, but the oil level is fine. I'll also ask the same question of my dealer.
On a different subject, The RS4 currently wears Pirelli P-Zero's and they seem extremely nervous, especially on white lines and longitudinal grooves i.e. grooves that go in the same direction as that of the car. Is this a "feature" of the car or the tyres ?

Just spoken to my audi garage they think it could be Lambda Sensors fault... any how get to the local audi garage to get it looked at

Pirellis are dreadful at tramlining.... a trait of all RS4s but with a the correct tyre and set up on the adverse camber can be vertually tamed.

ditch the pirelli's the worse set of tyres i have had on my car

Change to Michellin Pilot Sports / Yokohama AVs and the car behaves totally differntly

I've just changed from Pirelli to Goodyear F1 D3
and the car is transformed from a tramlining nightmate into an accurate steering pleasure.

Could the start up noise be a loose heat shield, thats what mine sounds like?
