Sounds like air in take problem of some kind,or noisy DVs, this does effect the performance quiet dramatically though, check all your hoses and linkages, for splits or decouplement.

Also first sign of Turbo failure is a real bad nose
But to be safe get it checked ASAP
Good luck

Check some of Mark W's posts from RS4.org, (they are here somewhere I think.) Sounds quite similar to his problem with a loose hose on a turbo. His got worse until he really started to lose power.

Is it an "increasing" whistling type noise?
If so this can definitely point to imminent turbo failure
Definitely get it looked at ASAP.
A split/badly connected hose etc. should lead to a noticeable drop in performance, particularly if it's serious enough for the sound to be heard inside the car!

Hope it doesn't prove to be serious...good luck!

no that I'll ever claim to know a hell of a lot I have had turbo hose failure in the RS. Was after I changed my dump valves to Forge. Noticed a huge drop in power but no change in engine/turbo noise. So going from that narrow piece in info to me sounds like it's posibly a problem with a turbo itself. A 'whistle' however- I've always had that at low power- i.e. 1,5000rpm to 2,800.
