Varsity,

Thanks for the full explanation, and sorry it didn't work out but glad your losses were minimal.

Sorry to hear Ash's S4 is proper sick. I met Ash & Satan yesterday, had a good chat, nice guys and good to put faces to names. :D

I just hope it doesn't happen to someone else as the seller, doesn't seem to care about KARMA.

I am not saying it is cloned for definate, all I am saying is I spent more than enough time on this and as far as I am concerned its not a proper RS4 or if it is it's just not right. If someone else wants it then be my guest.

Sounds like a genuine RS4 with the VIN of a normal A4 but..
HPI gets its vehicle ID data direct from DVLA database so the logbook should match the HPI info.
Did you see the V5 logbook?
Did this and HPI both confirm it was an RS4?
The VIN on the ECU shown on VAG COM not matching is very bad!
Can you reveal to us the reg and the VIN?

Ask Doug to emial it to you.

The V5 was old style and it did say RS4 with all numbers matching, even HPI veryfied it.

I really wanted the car, so you can see how difficult this was for me, however it wasn't meant to be for reasons beyond my control.

When you import a car, bike or truck it was easy to have what ever you wanted put on the V5, within reason. My H2 came in as a GMC Truck! The Corette was shown as a GM Coupe. However the new SVA rules stop that as you need type approval which requires a letter from the supplying manufacturer to show what it is before it can be registered, hence this wouldn't have happened.

Cheers Varsity for the extra info.
How many other RHD markets were there for the B5 RS4?
Was Japan definitely one of them?
I suppose (pre SVA) you could have shipped a stolen car from the UK to anywhere (Rep. Ireland is convenient) then bring it back in once the cloning had taken place using ID of wrecked Irish A4? Or even keep the stolen car in the UK, use the ID of a wrecked A4 from overseas which you import 'on paper' and add RS4 to the V5.
All HPI does is repeat what's on the V5 so if people could choose their own model when importing pre-SVA it wouldn't be much use. Thank god for quattro GmbH branded VIN sticker as this makes it harder but only if you know what to look for.

And don't forget, there should be a VIN sticker in the spare wheel well which I doubt many cloners will forge once they've ripped it out.

The Santorini Blue of this one does narrow it down rather so should be easy to trace.

Having bought and sold cars for 10 years, I can promise that anything that looks like a real bargain, is usually not what it seems especially with emotive cars like these.

I am deaf, the B7 sounds awesome with just the manifolds and no exhaust system, however I might just cause a few problems with the nieghbours unless the new pipes go back on.

Hooray for decats!
