First B5 RS4- £14.5k enough?

The Misano example in the link above is really nice, the spec and condition are amazing- I'd seen it advertised before I introduced myself and its on the list.
I'm in Hampshire but will travel anywhere for the right car. I'd rather buy from an enthusiast or specialist trader who knows what he's selling and unlikely to have bought a nail by mistake. Other than Nick Johnson, whose cars look great but out of my price range, are there any other specialist traders I ought to be looking at?

I've just bought one, after owning an S4 for 2 years.

They're pretty much like any 8/9 year old car. Have a good poke around and test drive and see what you think. Assess the Owner - does he care about the car?
Take someone with VAG-COM who can download fault codes and take some running logs. These can then be e-mailed to a specialist for assessment. Getting a vendor to drive the car 200 miles to MRC or Unit 20 is not going to happen.
The one I bought was not running right but Doug at MRC correctly diagnosed leaking diverter valves and faulty MAF by looking at some logs I sent him. Got the cost of having that rectified knocked off the price.
It needs front discs in a while. Knocked that off the price.
Needs a cambelt in 10000 miles. Knocked that off the price.
Needed a service. Knocked that off the price.
The vendor had had a TVR and a Porsche in the last few years and wasn't an Audi enthusiast as such but I got the feeling that he was up for selling reasonably quickly. He knew about the brakes and cambelt needing to be done so wasn't in a strong position to hold out for top money.
Had it serviced at MRC a couple of days after I bought it and the only "issues" I didn't spot were two broken rear springs and a very small oil leak at the front of one of the camshafts. So, with those and the brakes and cambelt ive got £2k to spend in 10000 miles - but can budget for that after Christmas although will get the springs done sooner.
I think that the trick is to go and look at a few and you'll know when you see the right one for you.
Would be happy to look at one with you - i'm in Hampshire too.

Sounds like a good Buy Duncan. The VAGCOM data sent to a specialist is a good idea, and certainly more realistic than dragging a vendor to the other end of the country!
I've got to be realistic, these cars are nearly 10 years old so I'm not looking for (and cant afford!) a museum piece, but i'd like to find a solid car like you and Stumpy67 have.
In general I get the feeling that unlike cars such as the M3 the B5 RS4 is more of enthusiasts car and bought by those in the know, and as such there is fewer in the hands of those who can scrape together the asking price to look 'bling', but not afford the running costs.
I'm really looking forward to this!

At the price I paid for mine - and others can be had for, it was a no brainer really - I had a 125000 mile S4 on original turbos, original shocks, all original bushes, and cambelt due in 20000 miles.
If i'd kept the S4 for another 3 or 4 years the probability of needing new turbos would increase and i'd need to spend probably £1000 on the shocks and bushes and £700 on the cambelt - with still the possibility of £4000 if the turbos went pop. So, instead I bought a car with 50000 less miles and hopefully more reliable turbos.
With only 500 or so brought into the UK it's something to look after and may even hold its value.
