Not a rocket scientist (unfortunately) but would imagine the reason this happens and why its probably not a good idea to make the union too rigid is the twisting motion of the longitudinal engine inder load- if the union is too rigid it would probably shear off and then you're knackered. obviously a <beep> design but you don't want to make things worse months down the line..... Just my twopenneth.
