I agree.
Problem is VED also helps to identify other problems, such as unroadworthy cars - in order to tax your car, you need insurance and MOT.
No tax usually = no insurance or MOT, so I don't think they'll bin it all together any time soon...

Not really- they could just keep a register of MOT status now its computerised and DVLA aren't so hot on tracking down evaders/chancers and crooks- theres still loads of it going on- just think how much they'd save if they dismantled the DVLA, I've been of the same opinion as Contiqo for a long time for exactly the same reason- you can't evade putting fuel in your car so stick a reasonable premium on fuel to 'compensate' the Treasury and those who do the most or the least economical jouneys- Chelsea tractor driving yummies and their overweight offspring for example- pay the most for their habits. The other point worth mentioning is that no-one in their right mind is going to trouser-up the Chancellor to the tune of 400+ sheckels a year and then jump on a smelly, crowded, outmoded and expensive public transport system. Bottom line - car on the drive- no expense, short non-economical runs- very expensive. Its almost a public service. I run a Smart car as well and a motorbike which solves the fit for purpose aspect of life- long, fast cruises RS, short commuter hops and parking issues Smart, fun local blasts- bike. Total tax between all 3 is c. £350 which is less than one 225gmCO2 vehicle- bargain!! Total cost of all 3 -c.£32k collectively but over 3 or 4 years- OK so insurance is a bit more even though I've got multi car/bike policies- I can only drive one at a time after all but I'd only be paying petrol for one at a time too- Smart 50/gall, RS26/gall, Priller 40-50/gall- I don't even mind taking public transport when occasion demands- I'd never pay the Congestion charge/London parking fees when off-peak trains into London and the Underground are so cheap- no matter how crappy the conditions- feel like I'm sticking two fingers up to the establishment every time -S25RS knows what I'm talking about.
Don't want to come across as a flash git- know alot of you will have other commitments beside your transport, just trying to illustrate how utterly wrong the Government have got it as already stated by everyone else.
Just a quick one for Mr mbelle- the DVLA don't give a monkeys about uninsured drivers/MOT failures cos a lot of them are crooks and/or foreign nationals who they can never track down anyway as some details are usually false- its YOU they go after because they can trace you and you're a soft touch as a result. Sorry to rant on but now the spleens vented........ :bash:

Brown (or Ali D) won't backtrack at all ... he is listening to Blairs mantra that sometimes you have to make the tough decisions (Browns tough decision is road tax, Blairs was only a war). They won't ever do away with road tax as it is a means of registering vehicles, get rid of VRD and you lose thousands of jobs across the UK and lose track of vehicles.

But with VED you create unnecessary adminitration charges, if the DVLA got rid of the VED and came to an agreement with Grodon about adding it onto fuel then they would be quids in.

Totally agreed Mr Contiqo- any decision to scrap VED/DVLA would be met with huge restance from the local MP due to the number of potential job losses. On another slightly unrelated topic I note that the DVLA has cross-European cooperation to identify British speeders on the Continent and fine them back in Blighty, but strangely not the other way around- ?too much trouble to pursue them or they're making enough money out of us without tracking Jonny Foreigner down as well- am I just TOO cynical or what.......... :boohoo:

See this one has sold already, if the price is right then good ones sell. Been looking for a while but still too many dealers looking for too much in current economic climate. Fontain have another green one due in with better spec and slightly lower miles so waiting for them to call when in, will join the club eventually!

Not sure, did think would have it in when photos on site but told me yesterday afternoon they'd phone when it came in. Didn't mention it was getting any work carried out on it.
