I thought RS (Rally Sport) was attributed to engines that had been tinkered with by Cosworth. As Audi owned Cosworth at the time of RS4 development (although not sure if they still do), Cosworth were responsible for modifying the head unit on the original RS4 in conjunction with Quattro GMBH who took care of the rest of the package.

This however may or not explain the RS2 monicker nor the new RS4....

OMG I've just confused myself.....help!!

Thinking probably Ford as they used Cosworth tuning skills before any Audi RS's were on the scene.
Remember the all conquering Ford RS2000 Rally car (yellow) of the late seventies/early eighties?

Could be right with Porsche though as they had the Carrerra RS out roughly the same time eh?

What does Renn Sport mean by the way?

Porsche did the RS2 - Renn is German for Run. But I think the translation is more along the lines of "Track Sport".

So in a nutshell and for some clarity would it be true to say that there are two RS types out there?

RS - Renn Sport (Porsche)
RS - Rally(e) Sport (Cosworth)

If so then Audi may have incorporated them both in their vorsprung durch techniq.
Thats got to be another engineering first for Audi.
Well done lads & lassies oh yeh and thanks.... :D

To be fussy its actually "rennen" which directly translates from german to "run" but is also generally used in germany to mean "racing"

RS for Ford is Rallye Sport and nothing to do with Cosworth.

The first Ford RS badged car was actually the RS1600 not the RS2000.

The RS2000 wasnt made until 1973 (the second model was a capri RS2600)

The lairy rally car special was the RS200.

The RS label was first used by Skoda in 1973 on a skoda 130RS

The first Porsche RS model was released in 1973.

RS = reasonable sportscar
RS4-ever

- RS4 B5, 2001, avus, stock but basically all options (former mileage eater, now leisure usage only)
- A4 3.0 Avant, 2002, silver (current mileage eater)
- Z3 3.0 roadster, 2003, silver (missus car)
