What to do.....

After figuring out that my over sensitive esp is more than likely down to the tyres I have decided not to go out an get new tyres yet, I can always switch off the esp when i need to nail it.

So I have around a £1000 to spend on the old girl (not the missis!) and would like some ideas on where to spend it.

What upgrade for around £1000 would i feel the most benefit from?

The car is standard, rear exhaust bracket has broken off the rear box, so maybe exhaust system? The gear linkage is feeling a little sloppy, maybe a Short shift? Gear changes can be a little harsh, maybe clutch? It also needs new break pads, oil and spark plugs changed which needs to come out of this budget too.

I can see the grand not lasting long! Theres always next month :)

To be honest, with those 'improvements' you.ve stated, you won't get much change from the £1000 budget, I would personally, put maintainance at the top of the list, if you say pads, oil and plugs need changing, then definately do these first, as a temp repair, the exhaust bracket can be welded.

Saying that, I had my brakes upgraded as I found them to be quite poor, considering the weight and power of the B5, if your discs need changing too, then you may want to consider putting the money towards a better setup.

Gear changes are not the best to begin with, so you need to determine whether you have a genuine issue or is it just they way the B5 is!

I improved mine gradually, putting priority mods at the top of the list, ARBs is a really good way to spend some of the money too, so keep this in mind for down the line.

Nils - Getting the service done is on the top of the list fo sure! aiming to gradually upgrade the car over time also. What brake upgrade did you do? ive been looking at the RS6 caliper upgrade. My discs are ok at the mo, so im thinking just pads for now and then upgrade next time. Go for OEM pads?

As for gear changes, when coming of the clutch, no matter how gently theres quite as thud which seems to come from the rear mainly. It gets better if I go on the power later than usual. So for sure this could just be a B5'ism. Gonna check the history and find out when the clutch was done. I do quite fancy a lightened flywheel and new clutch at some point.

Another question, when the pre cats are gutted, does his make the emissions too high for MOT's?

Theres going to be a few post like this from me over the next few months as im just getting into upgrading the beast! of course i will do what research i can... :P

£1000 won't buy a lot collectively unfortunately.

Cambelt and service is probably a good start (unless it's just been changed)
Removing pre cats gives no concerns for MOT nice cheap performance.
All B5's have drive train shunt fitting a DTS can help prevent it.
RS6 brakes are good, I have brembo 6 pots which also work well.
Anti roll bars can make a huge difference over the stock items instantly.
Air filter and air box mod cheap upgrade.
Short shifter does make a noticeable improvement.

Cheers Davs, Appreciate the input. Excuse my 'noobness' whats a DTS? and where can i find some info on the air box mod? Im aiming to have £1k spare each month to spend on it, well maybe less over the xmas period! The brembo upgrade is around £3k? if so I think i will stick to the RS6 or B7 upgrade.

10k service, fuel filter, gearbox oil , front pads and custom remap cost £1250ish on mine at MRC....

DTS- Drive Train Stabiliser fits underneath car supports gearbox £200 ish
Do a search for Darin mod (air box) and ITG filter.
Plan on exhaust and fitting 1k ish
Brakes around 1k ish
ARB's £300 ish
Remap ......suspension...........intercoolers....................turbos...............the list goes on :D

As mentioned, service/maintainenece items first. That's your 1000 gone.
Get it running right before upograding anything...

Also, use the 'search' feature at the top, this is the best way to get a variety of opinion etc, as upgrades/improvements have been covered X amount of time.
Also, you will find every individual wants different things, so looking back at past posts would give you better scope and help you decide which options are best suited to your needs.

I have the B7 setup all round, more than sufficient for the B5 but again not cheap!

As mentioned the 'shunt' you get inbetween gear changes is easily rectified by installing a gearbox brace (DTS).

Not necessarily. There is a thread over on AudiSRS at the moment regarding excessive drivetrain shunt (kangarooing, very noticable shunt whenever going on/coming off the power). I have a DTS fitted, as well as newish engine and gearbox mounts and it's still there.

Prop shaft, centre diff, snub mount, rear diff mount, flywheel and gerabox have all been suggested as possible causes of this. No one seems to have got to the bottom of it yet without replacing most of the above in one go.

Usually most noticeable on acceleration after braking- isn't that something to do with re-engagement of 4 wheel drive- I thought drive to the rear was disengaged on brake application?......
I've got a ESP DTS and solid gearknob and found a lessening of the phenomena ever since- so the debate rolls on.

We have permanent 4 wheel drive on the S4/RS4's.
