Why RS4 has mega midrange?

Post by kn9 » Tue Apr 21, 2009 10:06 pm

Had a quick play on the dynoplot website.

The RS4 graph has such a huge midrange hp and torque ie around 3000-6000rpm.... compared to similar peak power engines eg. S4, and even bigger displacement eg. nissan rb30 and toyota supra 3.0l.

what design by cosworth made this possible?

Yep Cosworth fettled with the cylinder heads and this resulted in a 50% power increase over the S4.

Cosworth has a reputation regarding cilinder-heads;they also machine and provide the heads for the 1000+ bhp EVO's in Florida.
The Merc. 190E 2,3-16 is a nice N/A example from the eighties.

Here's a comparison plot of 3 600hp cars:
MRC tuned RS4 2.6l
Nissan skyline RB30 3.0l
Toyota Supra 3.0l

The rs4 just monsters the others in midrange torque and hp. It has lots more hp from 2500 rpm to 5250 rpm.

Just took a look at that and was a tad sidetracked when I saw the 700+bhp 1.8T!!!

Just look how far to the right the power curve is for that 1.8l...

It's just like those 1000hp supras that has only 1000rpm of power range.

Of course, here's MRC 3.0l vs the ultimate torque monster... twin turbo V12!

Only problem is, too much torque will just become burnt rubber on the road and not much speed.

I think a well-tuned rs4 hits the sweet spot between low-midrange torque and peak hp....
