Turbo whistle, limp mode, VAGCOM codes.... what am I in for?

Turbo whistle, limp mode, VAGCOM codes.... what am I in for?

About two days ago, noticed a whistle whilst driving. Assuming it must be turbo related as the pitch increased with an open throttle. Starts as a low deep whistle about 2500rpm, rising rapidly in pitch as the rpm increases (whilst holding the throttle open). Ceases immediately on closing the throttle.

Had a good look and listen this morning: the whistle appears to come from the near side deep back of the engine.

On the motorway drive back to London this afternoon, car went into limp mode (very distinct lack of power). The whistle is now only a low pitched hum.

Vag com'd the car this evening and have:

Control Module Part Number: 8D0 907 551 K

Software Coding: 10711
Work Shop Code: WSC 00016
Additional Info: WUAZZZ8DZ1N902755 AUZ7Z0Y1651951
3 Faults Found:

P0300 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
16687 - Cylinder 3: Misfire Detected
P0303 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17965 - Charge Pressure Control: Positive Deviation
P1557 - 35-00 -

I take it my problem is related to 17965?!

I haven't covered more than 50 miles since the whistle started.

Any opening thoughts on what I might be in for?

I'm obviously loathed to think 'new turbos' and hoping that it'll be a simple leak or value or something. But I have a feeling I'm dreaming. Will a turbo really go from working just fine to seriously not working in under 50 miles?

Don't run the car with any boost ! ! ! Disconnect your n75 valve, It's under the little left carbon engine cover , it's got a brown plug on it . Get it pressure test. as soon as you can .

There are several members in London who will help. Good luck ... Grizz

Cheers contigo and grizz.

Well I’m fingers crossed it’s boost leak and not turbo.

Thanks for the tip on disconnecting the N75 value. However, decided that since I’m a good 70 miles from my garage and I’ve got RAC cover, I’d make use of the RAC and get them to pick the car up and drop it at my garage. Least risk of causing any (more?) damage I figure.

Spoke to my mechanic. If after he’s looked at it, it proves to be the turbo (which I understand is engine out to replace – and replace both), then I’ll probably bring forward the 80k cambelt change (currently 67k on clock) and do the whole lot in one go. That’ll be a couple of grand I wasn’t planning on spending this month!

If it is the turbo, any good recommendations for either new turbos or refurbishing of my current ones? (Keen to keep the car stock factory spec btw, so I’m not thinking upgrades).

I’ll keep you posted on the diagnosis.

Many thanks!

I doubt it's turbo's but you never know for sure. Ask them to connect it up to the pressure hose and test for leaks, best hope they know what they are doing. I'd be more inclined to take it to MRC in Banbury to get it looked at and whilst there get new MAF, N75 and health check too.

Has the price to s&f new turbos dropped at all, or is it the same as it used to be, give or take? Just that "a couple of grand I hadn't intended to spend this month" seems optomistic if it's new turbos...... sorry

Yep, I’m in the fortunate position of having a great garage/mechanic who I trust. 15yrs ex Audi/VW and sees a lot of the B5 RS4s (looks after the stock of one of our major traders in the B5 RS4s). Certainly hasn't let me down yet.

More than a couple of grand?! Ouch. Does any one know how much new Audi OEM turbos are?

I was trying to get a feel for things today cost wise. A quick Google takes me to Audi Turbochargers. £728+VAT each new or recondition my turbos from £248-548+VAT depending on state/damage etc.

Labour for engine in/out obviously won’t be pleasant. Anyone know the Audi estimate for doing that? If I was guessing I’d be thinking a day out and another day to put back (16hrs total), but that’s a complete guess.

Car was delivered courtesy of a RAC low-loader at 5:30 today.

I await the phone call sometime tomorrow/Wednesday.

Damn stiff drink when I get home this evening!

Sorry, didnt want to cause you any concern, but IIRC, to supply & fit both turbos was in the region of £3000-£3500, or am I completely way out with these figures? My worry about that bill was a reason I got out of my RS.
Like the advice above, suggest ringing a few folks, especially the guys mentioned on here on here.
You wait, I'm trying (not intentionally) to get you worried and all it'll be is a leak from a hose :)

That's about right for two new turbos & fitting.

This and the cam wear issue is the reason I've just coughed up for a warrantee.

The misfire codes could well be that the spark plugs are slightly loose.

As for the charge pressure, as others have said it is almost certainly a boost leak. I suppose there is every chance that the turbos are ok.
For information, Audi replaced mine under warranty 4 years ago and it cost just shy of £5k with internal discount!
