Longer 6th gear ?

Post by dodgydave » Wed Aug 02, 2006 11:42 am

Tekkies,

I'm just overhauling my gearbox. (I had one of the old noisy 1st gear once!)
And because I'm going to run quite a bit of power with the new engine I thought it would be sensible to lengthen the 6th gear for those German Autobahn moments! ;-)
I just like to drop around 200-300 rpm. I’ve been aimlessly looking in ETKA but couldn't find a suitable gear.

Anyone know who does them or which AUDI gearbox I could get it from?

Help's like always appreciated.

Dave

Dave, the RS4 6th gear has a ratio of 0.684. You can go lower by using the following 6th gears from diesel 01E gearboxes:

01E 311 362 L, 0.6 ratio
01E 311 362 D, 0.56 ratio.

Prices, £229.38 incl VAT from your friendly Audi dealer. Ouch but not that bad. 0.6 Wouldn't be too bad IMHO, 0.56 would definitely be too low and the drop from 5th to 6th would be huge IMHO.

HTH,

Mihnea

PS: I'd never done this search before, it took me 5 mins to find them in ETKA...

Thanks ! It's easier if you know where to look. ;-)

Those numbers you stated don't show up on my ETKA. Maybe my version is incomplete/old??? Just out of interest, what engine/car are they from ?

Cheers,
Dave

Audi A4 2.5 TDI quattro I think, gearbox codes are: DQT/FTF for 362D and EHW/FTK for 362L. ;)

I just selected A4Q 2000 and worked my way from there ;)

Cheers,

Mihnea

Good question, I'm interested in that info too.

Also, how do you change just one gear in the cluster :?

While I've never stripped a modern car gearbox (Plenty of bike gearboxes) and a few old car boxes, Aye late 1970 escorts etc in my experience each gear is loose on the shaft so you can replace an indivual cog if you want. It would make sence to me that this goes for most gearboxes as I can't imagine how they can cost effectively manufacture a complete set of cogs in one go. I could be wrong....

I'm doing it myself as I don't really trust many mechanics in the UK. Especially with gearboxes as they are quite specialized work. I've done quite a few VW and AUDI S2/RS2 6th speed before. Looking at the manuals this box doesn't seem that different.

Also, I called a few places to get some prices and the ‘lack’ of competence and horrendous prices for the work put me right off. I mean if you advertise that you have 20+ years expertise with AUDI & VW gearboxes and don’t even know what a S4 or RS4 is, isn’t really getting my vote of confidence!! ;-)

Cheers,
Dave

Going on the following calculation

7250 (RPM) x 60 (miles per min) / 4.111 (final) / 0.684 (6th) / 806 (tyre rev per mile) = 191 MPH

So with the new 6th gear

7250 x 60 / 4.111 / 0.6 / 806 = 218 MPH

All we need from you Mihnea is the power to do it!

I'm with you there Patrick, but was wondering how you can change the size of one gear without changing it's opposite number in the box. I'm often wrong though :)

What opposite number do you mean, David? The gears are pressed on the main and secondary shafts and the synchro hubs are the same for all these gearboxes that I've listed above.

Just to confirm then, All we need is the part number "01E 311 362 L", which is the actual 0.6 ratio, 6th gear. The current syncro's and 5th gear in the RS4 B5 box are quite happy to sit with this?

Just spoke to Audi, 198 quid for the part, and they said I had to order to get a release date on the part. The part is on back order with the factory.

So, placed the order and they said they should give me a call tomorrow with a release date ... what a pain ...

Anyone know of a quicker way to get hold of this part? I imgaine not even a breakers could help with this, as they will not break a box for just 6th gear would they ????

they'd be more likely to sell you the whole box, but maybe that is the quickest way
