More details having spoken with the mechanic - it's severe corrosion at the rear of the front discs as opposed to excessive wear.

Interestingly the rears are absolutely fine!

I just fitted a set of Toyo SnowProx S954's on my RS4. £165 a corner for 265/30/20 on the standard rims. Once they've bedded in I'll post some feedback.
