Re: Engine build and 6MT swap
My experience of engine rebuilders and machine shops is generally negative. A buddy just had an engine back where they were paid to remove all the oil plugs and properly clean the block. They did neither and it came back full of swarf.

Re: Brake lines
Might be worth doing the flexis connected to the hard line at the same time, while you have it drained. You can get some lovely teflon/stainless hoses with pvc covers and stainless end fittings these days. If I still had mine, that would be on my todo list.

Re: Brake lines
Every car I've ever worked on I've done the replacements in copper or cunifer. As long as you use decent forming tool for the ends (which I would expect a garage to have), it's fine. Make sure the garage spend a bit of time getting all the bends and straights all nice and uniform so it's tidy - some...

Re: Cam chain tensioners/pads removal and replacement guide
Apologies that it's quite a few years ago now, so I don't remember it all! And so I'd also say, this is what I think I did - but if it's not working for you, don't force it! I defo didn't remove the crank pin. BUT, what I did do was make sure I was super careful on the install. Basically, rest the c...

Re: Vaico Camshaft Adjusters - Thumbs Up
Sorry, no. Certainly I removed the cams and adjusters to access the bottom shoe. Would it be possible to do in situ? I don’t know since I put new chains on at the same time.

Re: Engine removal YouTube video
That FAI one doesn’t look the same as OEM and Vaico, as far as I can see from the vid. Many non OE parts are better than OE, sadly that one wasn’t.

Re: Time to depart

I’m a poor student these days, I couldn’t afford the fuel bill.
I do still hang around here a bit though, for the rare occasions when I can help with anything parts or diy related.

Re: Suction noise after transmission fluid/filter service
You're good. I didn't actually quite show in my original pic on my DIY, but the 20mm is from the flat surface, not the recess. If you look closely at the pic you can see the caliper is standing out a bit from the tube - but it's not clear. For completeness, would you mind taking a pic from the flat ...

Re: Suction noise after transmission fluid/filter service
The "genuine ZF" filter is actually a Filtran filter : https://forum.rs246.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=133598 As Steve says, 20mm neck - but I've never actually seen a 25mm one in the wild. Anyway, that thread gives you the correct ZF part numbers that you can find a supplier of in the US. :) If you can...

Re: Gearbox service kit
I got a kit in November from tps. The main dealer was useless they tried to convince me it didn't have a filter in it... In the end, Audi dealers were my last port of call, and when I had to use them, I just gave them the part no. I used ifinterface, which I always found superbly reliable, includin...

Yeah, the right one and the wrong one. This is the right one, in the UK: https://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-197400-zf-automatic-transmission-oil-change-service-kit-for-zf-5hp24a-transmissions.aspx And I always found I needed a bit extra (I wrote it in the original DIY I think): https://www.opieo...

Re: Engine removal YouTube video
It’s not “that” bad. I removed mine 3 times on axle stands in my garage. There’s a lot to undo etc, but just follow the service manual and you’ll be fine. Used to take me a day to get the engine and box out. Could have done it quicker on a lift, I am sure.
