Sorry to be the harbinger of doom but that sounds like a broken clutch plate caused by a knackered DMF. Been there, done that, get ready for the thick end of £1700.

An update. The car was at the local Audi dealer today for diagnosis. No confirmed outcome - the recommended result is a gearbox strip totalling 11 hours and £1400 just to see if the problem is in the gearbox. Sounds like I could end up with a bill upwards of £2.5k. I have a replacement and have disconnected the +ve and -ve terminals but I can't see how the battery is held in place or how to remove the 3rd connector by the +ve terminal. Just to add my two penneth: Smooth gear change: transmission shunt particularly noticeable between 1st and 2nd.
