Well , I finally got the car back , having had the exhaust gas sensor replaced. I reckoned it felt quicker , the S4 torque low down was always there but it felt much quicker higher up the rev range so we timed it. Well , had the car in the local stealers today and the diagnostics showed a fault with a 'gas sensor' in the exhaust which they believe to be the cause of the diminished performance. I start the test by planting it in second at about 20mph , starting the clock as the speedo passes 30 mph and changing up to third at 5k rpm (tried changing at 6k rpm but no quicker) , so the lag isn't included.
